Not So Golden: New ‘Golden Bachelor’ Sparks Backlash for Ageist, Misogynistic Remarks Mel Owens’ words are raising red flags — and we’re not here for it.

Sometimes a person speaks, and you wish that they would just shove the word right back in their mouth

We may not be the biggest fans of The Bachelor franchise, but we have watched before drawing the conclusion that a lot of people are in it for the wrong reasons. Now, for the contestants, it may be for the right reasons to them. We understand that, too.

The Golden Bachelor is about finding love in your “golden years,” and we have loved that concept. The new Golden Bachelor, Mel Owens, has decided what “golden years” means and in the process has become an ageist and well, rude.

Mel Owens is 66 years old. He said that during the casting process, he told producers he preferred to date women, “45 to 60… just being honest.”

We can understand that everyone has a preferred age range. However, a lot of people leave their hearts and minds open, because age shouldn’t always define a person. Especially in your 50s and 60s.

Owens showed his rudeness, though, when he was on the sports podcast, In The Trenches. He said, “If they’re 60 or over, I’m cutting them.”

Owens is probably used to being catered to, as he once played in the NFL professionally and then, after retiring, became a lawyer. He’s got two sons and is divorced. But what he continued speaking on made us so grossed out by his presence.

He continued to show how gross he is by adding, This is not The Silver Bachelor, this is The Golden Bachelor, they’ve got to be fit, because I stay in shape and work out and stuff. And I told [the producers] to try to stay away from the artificial hips and the wigs.”

Season 2 of The Golden Bachelor airs this fall on ABC. We hope that ABC casts everyone over 60 and that they are all turned off by his misogyny. We definitely won’t be watching.
