A ‘Game of Thrones’ Reddit discussion sparks debate about Daenerys Targaryen’s sacrifice for the North.
Ever since the release of HBO’s eight-seasoned highly anticipated Game of Thrones in 2011, the series gave birth to several fan discussions and theories. Considering Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen as one of the most influential characters in the show, there sparked a debate surrounding her, that still hasn’t died down, years later.
Apart from gaining global fame, Emilia Clarke’s journey as Daenerys Targaryen struck a chord in many fans’ hearts, who then turned her into the HBO show’s most-loved character. However, despite her good deeds and loving nature, the last season saw Daenerys struggling to fit in at Winterfell as if the North didn’t care about her sacrifices. This particular behavior sparked debate among Redditors about whether or not she sacrificed for the North.
Fans Recall Daenerys Targaryen’s Sacrifices for the North
Taking on the iconic and powerful role of Daenerys Targaryen in HBO’s epic series Game of Thrones, Emilia Clarke delivered arguably her best performance to date. Evolving through the series and infusing the character with fierceness, Clark turned Daenerys into a beloved character. Further, her motherly nature combined with her warrior-like personality, turned her into an icon to look up to.
However, despite her passionate and caring nature that turned her into Queen of hearts, Daenerys Targaryen seemed struggling to fit in among the Northerners. Following her arrival at Winterfell, it seemed people were being cold towards her. Considering the Starks and Jon Snow as their own, the Northerners seemingly began rejecting the dragon queen.
This particular narrative sparked debate on social media, one of which was picked on Reddit. A user named Lousouwayla shared a collage showing Daenerys in the North with the caption, “North remembers everything except Daenerys’ sacrifice for them”. Further mentioning, “I always get hate for saying this but it’s true”, the user gathered attention toward Daenerys’ sacrifices with the post.
The first image in the collage showed the mother of dragons rescuing Jon Snow and his crew from the Night King. In the sequence, Jon and his team head North to capture a white walker to present it to Cersei Lannister and prove that the threat of the ‘dead’ taking over the world is real. During their mission, they get attacked from all four directions by the dead, when Daenerys swoops in to save the day.
Although the dragon queen lost one of her dragons, Viserion in the process, she still managed to help Jon Snow. Further, the second set of images showed Daenerys from the Battle of Winterfell, where she lost Ser Jorah after he tried to protect her. Posting the images the fan tried expressing how Daenerys lost two of her most precious beings, who were the most loyal to her, in her attempt to save the North.
Game of Thrones Fans Debate About Daenerys’ Sacrifices
While the original post on Reddit from Lousouwayla focuses on the sacrifice of Daenerys Targaryen for the North and the consequences of her attempt, fans appeared adding their perspective to the mix. With a bunch of fans claiming that the North didn’t seem to care about Jorah, netizens steered the debate towards different characters.
“I very doubt anyone knew or cared about Jorah”.
Meanwhile, addressing the collage, one user explained that North didn’t forget Daenerys’ sacrifice, but what the images showed were the casualties of a war that can’t be used to draw sympathy. “Nobody forgot that, where did you get your information from? Also, you have to expect casualties when fighting an enemy as strong or even stronger than you,” the user wrote.
“It’s not a land dispute, it’s an end-of-the-world scenario. Doing this was in Dany’s best interest as well. If you help me put out a fire in my house so it doesn’t spread to yours, I don’t owe you my house.”
On the other hand, another user came up with a rather interesting approach claiming that the dragon queen didn’t sacrifice anything for the North. Claiming that the mother of dragons was simply fighting in the North because it was the “end of the world” sort of situation, the user justified Daenerys’ actions.
