Although it makes perfect sense for Ghosts season 4, episode 3 to send Patience back beneath the Woodstone Mansion, her final comments opened up a major plot hole for the series. Ghosts season 4’s cast of characters got a little bit bigger thanks to the season 3 finale, but this new arrival was swiftly undone. In the season 4 premiere, viewers met Ghosts season 4’s new character Patience, a pious Puritan played by Happiest Season’s breakout star Mary Holland. Too strict even for a Puritan colony, Patience was inadvertently abandoned beneath the mansion by Isaac.
In an impressive moment of character growth, Isaac joined the rest of the ghosts to drag Patience out of “The dirt” and welcome her into the mansion. Although Isaac’s efforts were commendable, they soon proved misguided. Patience was capable of making blood flow from the mansion walls and she used her supernatural powers to enact major changes around the mansion. Sam’s Ghosts season 4 reunion with Frank, her estranged father, was almost ruined when an outraged Patience used her power to stop Frank from sharing a room with his girlfriend. However, the last straw for the show’s heroes came in season 4, episode 3.
Patience Reveals She Will Return To The “Others” In Her Farewell In Ghosts Season 4, Episode 3
Season 4, episode 3, “Halloween IV: The Witch,” saw Patience try Sam as a witch. When the rest of the ghosts playfully voted to confirm that Sam was a witch, Patience seemingly turned her into a stone statue. This resulted in a major panic until the episode’s ending eventually revealed Patience was bluffing and Sam was fine. Isaac’s Ghosts season 4 redemption arc continued as he pointed out Patience’s hypocrisy, noting that she watched trashy TV with him while the ghosts tried to save Sam. Ashamed, Patience decided that the mansion was a den of sin she could no longer stand.
As she announced her move back down to “The dirt,” Patience mentioned that “The others” would most likely be waiting for her. The ghosts were understandably worried, but it is not clear what “Others” Patience could be referring to. After all, a defining characteristic of the character’s backstory was that she was isolated and alone during the entirety of her time in the mansion. Isaac only felt bad about her fate because he, like everyone else, thought she was effectively trapped in solitary confinement. Even Patience’s tragic Ghosts season 4 catchphrase built on this idea, seemingly stemming from her lack of human contact.
Ghosts Season 4, Episode 1 Establishes That Patience’s Only Friend Is The Dirt
This vague allusion to the “Others” might just have been meant as a throwaway joke and a passing instance of Patience once again creeping out her fellow ghosts. However, Patience made it sound like she had other ghost friends with the comment, which makes her anger toward Isaac much less reasonable in retrospect. It is also unclear why she spent so long above ground if the “Others” awaited her return below, especially when neither Sam nor the ghosts warmed to her. This Ghosts season 4 plot hole likely won’t be answered soon as Patience’s arc appears to already be over.
