Prime Video’s Two Biggest Shows Highlight A Huge Genre Trend

While Maxton Hall and The Summer I Turned Pretty are hardly identical, Prime’s two biggest shows of December 2025 do have one pivotal thing in common. The Summer I Turned Pretty’s season 3 ending leaves the fate of the franchise hard to decipher. Seemingly, Belly finally decides which of the Fisher brothers she wants to be with for good.

However, this makes it tough to work out what The Summer I Turned Pretty’s upcoming movie will focus on. That said, it is less tough to work out why Prime is producing a movie to end the series regardless. Even if its storyline might be hard to work out, the popularity of the show demands a follow-up.

Adapted from Jenny Han’s novel trilogy of the same name, Prime’s The Summer I Turned Pretty is arguably an even bigger hit than Netflix’s earlier movie trilogy based on Han’s books, the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before movies. The only show that has earned even more viewers in December 2025 is Maxton Hall—The World Between Us.

A German TV series based on the novel Save Me by Mona Kasten, Maxton Hall follows Rudy Bell, a bright young student who attends the titular prestigious school on a scholarship. Bell soon becomes embroiled in an unlikely star-crossed romance with James Beaufort, a privileged, arrogant legacy student who rules the school.

While the ending of Maxton Hall season 2 might be devastating, that has not stopped viewers from tuning into the show in their droves. The German series managed the impressive achievement of unseating The Summer I Turned Pretty as Prime’s most-watched show in the first week of December 2025, highlighting a surprising TV trend.

Prime Video’s Successful Shows Prove Teen Romance Shows Can Be Huge

Adaptations of teen romance novels are big business again, judging by Prime Video’s most-watched streaming titles. Despite the high-profile failures of the Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars reboots in 2021 and 2022, streaming services can clearly afford to bet big on new shows based on popular teen romance book series.

This shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, since Netflix’s movie hits did hint at this a few years earlier. Before Maxton Hall season 2 was topping the Amazon charts, Netflix’s The Kissing Booth movies and the aforementioned To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before movies both fared well with viewers, despite mixed reviews.

Evidently, rehashing existing 00s teen TV shows based on books isn’t a guaranteed recipe for success. However, if Maxton Hall and The Summer I Turned Pretty dominating the Prime charts proves anything, it is that new teen book adaptations have huge potential on streaming services.
