Ramón Rodríguez Just Shut Down Will Trent’s Most Controversial Season 4 Theory — But I’m Still Not Over It

Throughout Will Trent‘s first three seasons, one disputed storyline has dominated the plot, but according to Ramón Rodríguez, it has finally come to an end. The series follows Rodríguez’s Will Trent, a GBI agent with a complex past (and present, if we’re being honest). He has been through a lot in his life, but he has (almost) always had his best friend by his side.

Will met Angie Polaski in the foster care system when they were just kids. The two of them quickly formed a close bond that one day turned romantic. Since then, Will and Angie have been in an on-and-off relationship, but after the thrilling Will Trent season 3 finale, it seems as though they’re permanently in the “off” stage of their romance.

During an interview with Deadline, Rodríguez (who stars as the titular character and executive produces Will Trent) discussed Will and Angie’s tumultuous arc in season 3. After arresting her at the end of Will Trent season 2, Will’s relationship with Angie appeared to be broken beyond repair. And according to Rodríguez, it is.

Will and Angie started seeing other people in season 3, with him dating Gina Rodriguez’s Marion Alba and her dating Scott Foley’s Dr. Seth McDale. Will and Marion’s romance didn’t exactly work out. As for Angie and Seth, she got pregnant and decided in the finale that she wanted to keep it. In reaction to this new development, Rodríguez told Deadline:

“It feels like real finality [for Will and Angie]. That will be a fun conversation we’ll get into in season 4, about where they’re at now. I love that we ended it showing that Will shows up for Angie, even when it crushes and absolutely devastates him. He wants to be there for her even though it was a really tough moment. Everyone on set was emotional. It was a very tense and tough thing because he sees the thing that Will has always wanted be so close, but out of his reach.”

Rodríguez describing the season 3 finale as a “real finality” for Will and Angie feels like this is the end of the road for them. Yes, there have been close calls before. Will and Angie have broken up and gotten back together more times than anyone could count. However, what transpired at the end of Will Trent season 3 is a game-changer.

Will had to hold Angie’s hand while she got a sonogram to check if she had a miscarriage. Then, he had to watch Angie and Seth rejoice in their baby’s health and decide that they wanted to be parents (something Will had always imagined for his and Angie’s future). So, perhaps Rodríguez’s comments aren’t too surprising, but they are groundbreaking.

Will and Angie’s relationship in Will Trent has inarguably been toxic. Their bond was formed when they were at their most vulnerable and had undergone various unthinkable tragedies. Consequently, Will and Angie’s trauma always found a way to tear them apart. So, while breaking them up for good is for the best, it’s also a hard pill to swallow.

Some viewers have been adamant that Will and Angie are bad for each other (at least, in a romantic sense). Meanwhile, others admire their bond and want to see their relationship work. Unfortunately, Will and Angie going the distance seems impossible, and Rodríguez’s comments all but confirm that, even if the truth still stings a little bit.

The good news is that Will and Angie can still be friends in Will Trent season 4. It might be difficult for Will to watch Angie start a family with someone else, but their bond runs too deep for him to cut her out of his life. No one understands Will and Angie like they understand one another, meaning they’ll always be in each other’s lives, even if only as friends.

Will Trent tends to stray from the books, but the show is seemingly following Will and Angie’s storyline, if only in a broad sense (slight spoilers from Karin Slaughter’s series ahead). Well, Will and Angie are quite different from their book counterparts. Still, they don’t end up together in the novels, and they evidently won’t in the ABC crime drama.

Like in Will Trent, Will and Angie have a tumultuous, on-and-off relationship in the books. She is much more toxic on paper, though, which makes it easier to root against them. Nevertheless, Will and Angie’s trauma often results in an unhealthy romance that only ever ends in disaster — sound familiar?

Will and Angie aren’t endgame in Slaughter’s Will Trent novels. Based on Rodríguez’s comments following the season 3 finale, they aren’t meant to be in the police procedural TV series, either. Will eventually finds another love interest, Sara Linton, who may or may not appear in the TV show, if season 3’s ending is any indication.

The Will Trent co-showrunners have been teasing Sara’s introduction for a couple of years now. Maybe since Angie is happy and in love with Seth heading into season 4, it might finally be the right time for Sara to arrive. Only time will tell how Will and Sara’s story plays out in Will Trent, though, and if it’ll be similar to the books.
