Ransom Canyon Finale: Justice for Randall? Kit’s Fate Revealed

In Ransom Canyon’s ending, it seems as if almost everybody has lost something. Netflix’s 10-parter tells the story of the people of the small town of Ransom and how their lives get messed up when a big company tries to buy out their lands. In Ransom Canyon, we see multi-generational stories play out in parallel upping the stakes. Staten Kirkland and his friend, known as just Cap, are the only two people who aren’t willing to sell to Austin Water & Power, a company that is backed by Staten’s dad, who has a political agenda. Apart from being a Western, the show really focuses on father-son relationships all around. For Staten, he doesn’t get along with his old man because he walked out on him, and his granddad raised him; that’s why the ranch skipped a generation and went straight to Staten. On the other hand, there are two boys, Kit and Lucas, whose dad walked out on them, and now they’re on their own. Meanwhile, Staten’s brother-in-law is Davis, and despite their relationship, their families have been sworn enemies for generations. To add fuel to the fire, they’re now both eyeing the same woman, Quinn, an old love of Staten and his late wife’s best friend. Davis brings on a guy named Yancy Grey to get Cap to sell, while he tries to focus on Staten, a year after tragedy struck Staten and he lost his only son, Randall, in a car accident. Who killed Randall? Will Staten and Cap sell? Let’s find out in the ending of season 1.

Is Cap Dead?

In episode 9, Yancy finds a dead Cap in the middle of his ranch, clutching a photo of Yancy’s parents. Later, Staten tells him that when Yancy’s dad died and his mother had shown up at Cap’s door, he’d sent her away, but he looked for them for years before Yancy showed up himself. Cap felt guilty for turning away Yancy’s mother all those years ago, and that still weighed heavy on him until the day he died. Unfortunately, he never got to tell his grandson about it. Cap’s death is like an eye-opener for everybody in Ransom. Though he ran a tight ship, he was around for everybody in town. His death affects Ellie as much as, or maybe even more than, Yancy, because she grew up with the old man around and was always close to him. Before he died, Cap agreed to sell, but after his death, Yancy is in two minds about what to do. He tells Ellie that if he sells, he’ll give her and Ruth, Cap’s wife with dementia, all the money. It’s Ellie who convinces him to keep the ranch and save the place because that’s what Cap would’ve wanted. By this time, Yancy is madly in love with Ellie, so he decides to go with her plan. He tells Davis that the deal is off and that he’s not planning on selling the ranch anymore because he wants a life with Ellie.

What Happens Between Lucas and Lauren?

It seemed like we’d be seeing every single couple break up in Ransom Canyon’s finale, but the one couple that sticks it out in the end is Lucas and Lauren. Lauren tries to break up with Lucas because she didn’t tell him that she knew her mom killed Randall, for which Kit had been rotting in jail. But, interestingly enough, it is Reid who convinces Lucas to go after her, because he will snatch her back if Lucas doesn’t. I suppose this works on Lucas, who makes a massive speech at Gracie’s on the mic in front of the whole town. He tells Lauren that he’s never been more scared in his life than he is about losing her, so he really wants to make it work. Finally, he tells her he loves her. While this is all adorable, this is before Lucas knows that it was Margaret who got Kit in trouble. While Lucas and Lauren have the motto “They’re all that matters,” hiding the truth about Margaret will definitely make Lucas mad, so I guess he’ll end up going to some big school and then make his way back to Lauren when he’s ready. I hope this love triangle is done, though, because Reid is a good guy.

How Did Kit Get Arrested For Randall’s Death?

Though the sheriff tells Staten that Randall’s death was accidental, he’s sure there was another car on the road that night and won’t back down. He finds a piece of a bumper near where his boy was found and decides to do his own investigating. But it leads to a dead end for him because the vehicle he’s looking for is missing. Much later, Lucas finds a blue truck in a lake and immediately informs the police about it. At the same time, the sheriff finds footage of Reid and his friend Tim with the same blue truck, making him believe that Reid killed his own cousin. But this is far from the truth, because the two boys owed Kit a favor when they were doing some drug stuff back in the day, so they got rid of the truck for Kit. But this isn’t where it ends, because Kit didn’t kill Staten’s son either. It turns out it was Lauren’s mom, Margaret, who was driving drunk and hit the boy. Kit and Margaret were a couple at the time, so he chose to protect her. Later, he takes the blame for the whole thing and doesn’t even budge when Lucas asks him to sign emancipation papers.

During Ransom Canyon’s ending, it’s Lauren who convinces her dad to do the right thing by arresting his wife and setting things straight for the boy Kit. It all makes sense why he hated the boy so much, though, because he was sleeping with his wife. I suppose Margaret’s wake-up call really had to be going to jail, even though she’d started a new, presumably sober life in Austin, after her daughter called her out for being stuck on the wrong things. In the end, Kit comes back to his brother, and it looks like things are going to be okay for them.
