“What’s the Worst Thing That Could Happen?”: ‘Ransom Canyon’ Showrunner Breaks Down the Heartbreaking Season Finale Reveal
Throughout most of Ransom Canyon’s first season, we weren’t exactly sure if one of the biggest mysteries would have an answer. Maybe it would be a series-long question. Maybe we’d never find out. But we did find out who was driving the car that caused the tragic death of Randall Kirkland (Hubert Smielecki), and now we wish we didn’t. During an interview, series showrunner April Blair (All American) talked about the Season 1 finale and its implications.

Before delving into it, Blair underscored that this mystery is an entirely new element for Ransom Canyon, even for fans of the novel from author Jodi Thomas. Since it was not in the novel, the reveal was a surprise for everyone, and the showrunner broke down how they decided to approach the guilty party of the accident and how it directly impacted one of the main romantic relationships of the series. She stated:

“This mystery is not in the book, so we knew we needed the mystery spine, something kind of soapy to keep you going. I just played with it for a while. I mean, at one point, we were going to have another character that was Lucas and Kit’s mother, and we had considered that Kit was covering for his mother. But that didn’t unwind enough complications with other characters. We wanted to find two characters, and what’s the worst thing that could happen? Just when everything seems to be sweet and love and this young love, this very adult, dark thing is uncovered, and they have to contend with that, not just at the end of Season 1 but into a potential Season 2.”

Who Killed Randall Kirkland in ‘Ransom Canyon’?
In case you didn’t make the connection, there are many layers to the reveal. The first and most problematic was that Margaret Brigman (Sarah Minnich) was drunk-driving, which means that the tragedy could have been avoided. She’s the wife of Sheriff Brigman (Philip Winchester), which only complicates her case. Aside from that, it is revealed that Margaret was having an affair with Kit Russell (Casey W. Johnson), who is the brother of Lucas (Garret Wareing). How can Lucas and Lauren (Lizzy Green) keep seeing each other after that? We will have to wait to find out.

Luckily, even though Netflix hasn’t officially renewed Ransom Canyon for Season 2, Blair revealed that the writing team is already hard at work on the story for the upcoming episodes. So, if Netflix decides to bring back the series for additional episodes, it looks like production will move fast, and soon we will have answers for all the questions that Season 1 left behind.
