When Blue Bloods premiered in 2010, it introduced the world to the beloved Reagan family.
Tom Selleck starred in the police procedural as New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan, who was also the patriarch of a prominent family. His son, Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg), worked as an NYPD detective, while his youngest son Jamie (Will Estes) was a sergeant and daughter Erin (Bridget Moynahan) worked as an assistant district attorney for the city.
While the Reagan family dominated the screen for over a decade, the series also featured several supporting characters over the years — including Marisa Ramirez as Detective Maria Baez, Vanessa Ray as Officer Edit “Eddie” Janko, Robert Clohessy as Lieutenant Sidney Gormley, Gregory Jbara as Garrett Moore, Abigail Hawk as Detective Abigail Baker and Tony and Andrew Terraciano as Jack and Sean Reagan, respectively.
Although many of the stars stayed on for the entire show or several episodes, some cast members left in the midst of the series.
Here’s everything to know about the stars who left Blue Bloods and what they have done since.
Jennifer Esposito as Detective Jackie Curatola

For the first three seasons of Blue Bloods, Jennifer Esposito played Detective Jackie Curatola, the beloved partner of Danny. Jackie was divorced and often the center of harassment from her fellow officers and perps.
Jackie ended up taking an early retirement from the NYPD due to early burnout in 2012, midway through season 3. In reality, Esposito left the series after she claimed she “collapsed on set” as a result of her celiac disease diagnosis, per The Hollywood Reporter.
CBS said in a statement that Esposito had requested shorter hours due to her health, which they allegedly could not accommodate. At the time, Esposito slammed the network for taking her character off the show, writing on X, “CBS didn’t listen to my doc and I collapsed on set … It’s been almost two months without (bringing) me back to work + keeping (m)e from working anywhere else! … Absolutely shameful behavior.”
Although her time on Blue Bloods was cut short and ended with controversy, Esposito briefly reprised her role as a police chief in a small town for the final two seasons.
The actress continued embracing procedurals and starred in NCIS, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and The Boys. She also had notable roles in the films She’s Funny That Way and Mob Town and made her directorial debut with the movie Fresh Kills.
Off-screen, Esposito has been married to Jesper Vesterstrom since 2020.
Amy Carlson as Linda Reagan

Amy Carlson was a main member of the cast as Danny’s wife, Linda, during the first seven seasons. Linda and Danny were married for 20 years and shared two children together, Jack and Sean.
In addition to being a doting mother, Linda also worked as an ER nurse and had quite a few close calls with death. However, she was pulled from the show for good when she got into a helicopter crash in season 7.
After her character’s shocking death was revealed, Carlson addressed the news and claimed that she left the series as a result of contract negotiations.
“I feel badly that she dies the way she dies. I did not know they would do that, I was surprised. I wouldn’t have done that,” she said to Deadline in 2017, while adding that she wished fans could “have a way to grieve, to move through it.”
Meanwhile, Blue Bloods showrunner Kevin Wade claimed to Entertainment Weekly in 2018 that Carlson’s “departure wasn’t planned.”
After exiting the series, Carlson scored roles in The Society, FBI: Most Wanted, The Village, Smoke and co-wrote and directed the short film, The Letter. In her personal life, Carlson has been married to Syd Butler since 2004, and the couple share two children.

Sami Gayle portrayed Nicky Reagan-Boyle, Erin’s daughter and Frank’s granddaughter, for 10 seasons. Just like the rest of her family, Nicky dreamt of becoming a police officer and even attended the same school as her mother, Columbia University.
However, after graduating from the university, Nicky accepted a job in San Francisco in season 10. Although she left her family, Nicky made cameos in season 11 and the series finale.
Similar to her character on Blue Bloods, Gayle also studied at Columbia University; she left the show to focus on her education. Since graduating in 2018, Gayle has taken a step back from the entertainment industry but briefly acted in the Broadway production of Bad Cinderella in 2023.

Nicholas Turturro starred as Sergeant Anthony Renzulli, Jamie’s first partner and mentor, during the first three seasons of Blue Bloods. However, he only briefly appeared on seasons 4 through 6 and departed for good in 2016.
Ahead of his departure, Turturro encouraged Blue Bloods fans to help get him his own series and wrote on X in 2013, “Write to cbs and blue bloods that we need more renzulli maybe he needs a spinoff wouldnt that be a great idea.”
Before acting in Blue Bloods, Turturro had his fair share of drama experience while starring in NYPD Blue, which earned him a Screen Actors Guild Award, from 1993 to 2000. Afterward, he appeared on Law & Order: SVU, The Family Business and BlacKkKlansman.
Off-screen, Turturro has been married to Lissa Espinosa since 1996. He has at least two children.

Mayor Robert Levitt, who was portrayed by Bruce Altman, appointed Frank the police commissioner in the first season and became a recurring character.
However, he lost his election bid in 2011 and didn’t appear on the second season. Altman briefly reprised his role for season 3 after his daughter got arrested by Jamie for smoking weed.
Altman left the series for good in 2012 but continued acting in several other notable films and TV shows — including Mr. Robot, Power Book II: Ghost, Chicago P.D. and Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed.
In his personal life, Altman married Darcy M. McGraw in 1982. The couple’s daughter, Anna, tragically died in 2013.

David Ramsey joined the series for season 2 in 2011 after his character, Carter Poole, succeeded Levitt as Mayor of N.Y.C. Carter served as the mayor for seven seasons — even after surviving an assassination attempt that left him partially paralyzed.
He was reelected for a second term in 2015 but resigned in 2017 because of burnout. Ramsey didn’t share his reason for leaving the franchise, but he was also acting in the popular show Arrow at the same time.
In addition to Arrow and Blue Bloods, Ramsey has also acted in The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and The Hunting Party.
Off-screen, he has at least one child, a son named DJ.

Dino Arbogast, who was played by Ventimiglia, was named the police chief by Frank. Ventimiglia portrayed the character from seasons 2 through 4 before Dino had to resign after illicit activities in 2013.
Prior to his time on Blue Bloods, Ventimiglia was known for his role as Artie Bucco on The Sopranos. He went on to act in Blood Ties, The Good Wife and Jessica Jones.
In his personal life, the actor welcomed two children with his ex-wife Belinda: Lucinda and Odele. Ventimiglia is also a grandfather to Odele’s daughter, Shiloh. Odele tragically died in 2023.
