The new Blue Bloods spinoff series, Boston Blue, sees Donnie Wahlberg reprise the role of Danny Regan in a new city. But one key role was recast in the spinoff, and now the original actor is speaking out about the matter.

Actor Andrew Terraciano, who played Danny Regan’s son, Sean, on Blue Bloods from 2010 until 2024, talked with Us Weekly about the fact that CBS recast the role for Boston Blue. Mika Amonsen has taken on the Sean Reagan role in Boston Blue.

Terraciano talked about the recasting and told the outlet, “It’s beautiful because you’ll always remember every single line and every day that you had the opportunity to be that character.” He continued about his time playing Sean, “It doesn’t mean for even a second that somebody else can’t go and do something beautiful with it.”

The actor is seemingly okay with CBS choosing to recast Sean. “I got the joy of playing Sean, and I got to send him off into the world. Now somebody else gets that joy. We’re both getting to show what we do and then send Sean off into the world,” he said.

Before Boston Blue premiered in October, co-creator Brandon Margolis talked about the decision to go a different direction with the Sean character. “We wanted a slightly different version of Sean,” he said. “We wanted a character that feels familiar, an actor that does resemble the character that we watched grow up. But as you saw in the pilot, he has made some life changes and, having joined the police force, he is really picking up that family mantle,” Margolis told TV Insider.

Fans of Blue Bloods took to Reddit to voice their opinions on the recasting of Sean Reagan in Boston Blue. One fan, Strange-County-3836 on Reddit, wrote, “I was sad with the recast because I really like Andrew Terraciano and thought he did s splendid job as Sean over the 14 seasons of Blue Bloods. I don’t understand why they find it necessary to now have a different actor in the role.”

Boston Blue Continues the Blue Bloods Tradition

Boston Blue is yet another procedural hit for CBS and, like Blue Bloods, focuses on a multi-generational family and their ties to law enforcement. In Boston Blue, Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan and his son, Sean (Amonsen), are featured along with the Silver Family. Reagan is partnered with Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green), a rising star in the Boston Police Department.

Her grandfather, Reverend Peters, is played by Ghostbusters alum Ernie Hudson. The cast also includes Maggie Lawson, Marcus Scribner, and Gloria Reuben. Boston Blue became an instant hit on CBS and Paramount+ shortly after its October premiere. The show debuted in the No. 6 spot on Paramount+’s top 10.

The next new episode of Boston Blue will premiere on Dec. 12 on CBS. Past episodes of the show stream on Paramount+.
