“Rotten Tomatoes Gave It 44%, But Netflix’s Western Drama Is Dominating Streaming Charts”

Netflix’s new Western series has been drawing comparisons to Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone, and despite being poorly received by critics, the show has still been a huge hit for the streamer. Ransom Canyon, which stars Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly, remains the second-most-popular project on Netflix at the time of writing, 12 days after its premiere. The series has earned a 44% score from critics on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, but general audiences have been higher on the contemporary Western series, rating it at 73%. Ransom Canyon is a romance-charged family drama set against the backdrop of Texas Hill Country. The show follows the intersecting work and personal lives of three ranching families. Eoin MackenLizzy Greene, and Garrett Wareing also star in the Netflix series.

Ransom Canyon is based on the novel of the same name by Jodi Thomas, and April Blair adapted the book into a television series with Paul HaapaniemiLaura NavaLuca Rojas, and Joe Fazzio all working in the writer’s room. Blair first made her writing debut on Christmas Caper, the 2006 family comedy starring Shannon Doherty and Ty Olsson, but she has since become a Netflix TV veteran. She first wrote two episodes of You during the series’ debut season in 2018, and she followed that up by writing several episodes of WednesdayTim Burton’s horror series led by Jenna Ortega. She also wrote an episode of the Gilmore Girls reboot series. The leading director on Ransom Canyon is Amanda Marsalis, with four episodes, and David McWhirterMeera Menon, and Michael Offer each directing two episodes of the series.

What Else Is Streaming on Netflix Right Now?

Ransom Canyon is the second-most-popular show on Netflix at the time of writing, following only behind You, which recently debuted its final season. Monday Night Raw has also returned to Netflix charts after an explosive episode last night that featured stars such as Seth Rollins and Bron Breakker. On the film side of things, Tom Hardy’s new movie, Havoc, has taken over Netflix streaming charts despite being poorly received by general audiences. The 2019 heartfelt animal drama, A Dog’s Way Home, also hit Netflix recently and made a quick jump to #2 on streaming charts. Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper is currently the fifth most popular movie on Netflix.
