When CBS confirmed in early 2024 that Blue Bloods would end after 14 seasons, fans and cast members were vocal about their disappointment. Series star Tom Selleck, who played Commissioner Frank Reagan, thanked viewers for their loyalty, saying:
“For the past 13 years, it has been an honor and a privilege to work on a show that not only celebrates the men and women who protect and serve in New York City, but also displayed the importance of family.”
CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach cited the network’s need to “refresh the schedule,” emphasizing that “all shows have to come to an end.”
But even as Blue Bloods closed out its long run, it didn’t take long for its world to expand. Boston Blue marks the first official spin-off — and judging by the numbers, it may already have secured the franchise’s future.
What’s ‘Boston Blue’ About?
The first episode of Boston Blue premiered on CBS last Friday before heading to Paramount+ the next day, and the results were immediate. The new series — officially part of the Blue Bloods universe — has already become one of the most-streamed shows on Paramount+ in October and quietly broke a franchise record with a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score (based on early critic reviews).
In addition to Donnie Wahlberg as Danny Reagan and Sonequa Martin-Green as Lena Silver, Boston Blue also stars Maggie Lawson as Sarah Silver, Marcus Scribner as Jonah Silver, Mika Amonsen as Sean Reagan, Gloria Reuben as Mae Silver, Ernie Hudson as Reverend Edwin Peters, Bridget Moynahan as Erin Reagan, and more. Jerry Bruckheimer is executive producing Boston Blue alongside star Donnie Wahlberg. Anthony Hemingway, Jackeline Tejada, and Randy Zisk are all confirmed to direct episodes of Boston Blue Season 1.
New episodes of Boston Blue air Fridays on CBS and stream Saturdays on Paramount+.
