Julia Roberts Protected After Sally Field Takes Her Under Her Wing
It has been more than 35 years since Steel Magnolias captured the hearts of film lovers across the globe. Sally Field says she was instantly drawn to the film. She recalls one of the main reasons she wanted to make the movie was because of one iconic scene
Sally Field describes the scene as a ‘humdinger of a scene.’ The scene she calls one of her favorites follows the heartbreaking death of her on-screen daughter, played by Julia Roberts. It was a challenging scene that showed Sally Field’s character going through the five stages of grief in a short period.
But even then, Sally reveals that her biggest memory during the filming is Julia Roberts. She says Julia, at 19, was the baby on set compared to the rest of the cast. So when the late director Herbert Ross began picking on the young actress, Sally took her under her wing, and the other women protected her.
According to the Daily Mail, Sally admits that Herbert Ross was tough on Julia Roberts. He would constantly pick on her. But he didn’t dare bully her once he realized that Sally and the others would not stand for it.
Julia & Sally Remain Life Long Friends
Sally Field states that she and her co-stars didn’t like how hard Herbert was on Julia. So they rallied around her and tried to make the experience more pleasant for the newcomer.
“We all came to her aid,” Field said. “And I remember Dolly once just turned on him — always with humor, but usually the most vulgar humor you ever heard so that it was like, you just literally don’t have a leg to stand on.”
