Roseanne actress Emma Kenney, who plays Darlene’s teenage daughter Harris on the show, announced this week that she was getting treatment for her personal “battles.” Though she didn’t specify what she was getting treatment for, she did say in a statement that she “was running with a really fast crowd” and that she wanted to tell her fans that it’s okay to seek help.
On The Talk, cohost Sara Gilbert, who plays Darlene on Roseanne, took the time to send a supportive message to her TV daughter:
“I just first want to say, Emma, I’m so proud of you. I know that the whole cast and crew are so proud of you. We all have demons, it takes a lot of courage to face them, particularly at 18. I envy you. If I could go back to being 18 and start doing things to better myself at the pace you’re doing, I would be at a better person today. So I commend you, I love you, and I know you will come out the other side. Thank you for speaking out and being an example for other people.”
Gilbert and her cohosts also talked about the importance of knowing when and how to get help if you need it. “Looking for help, asking for help, we all learn to do that every day,” Gilbert said. “Friends, therapists, whoever, you just reach out to people and say, you know, ‘I need a hand, I’m not doing well with this right now, or this,’ and I think that’s nothing to be ashamed of and she’s setting a great example for people.”
