Season 3’s Shocking Reveal Sets the Stage for One Crucial Return in Will Trent Season 4

The last two episodes of Will Trent season 3 contained many surprises, one of which could and should lead to a villain’s return in season 4. ABC’s police procedural series has been known to shock its audience over the years. It has a way of dropping plot twists that make fans’ jaws drop to the floor, but these developments always make sense.

At the end of Will Trent season 3, the GBI and APD joined forces to find and stop a terrorist group from releasing a biological weapon. While the threat certainly raised the stakes (especially because Nico almost died), the final episodes featured a couple of other storylines that will completely change the course of the show. This included Will finding his dad.

Will Learned Who His Biological Father Was At The End Of Season 3

Sheriff Caleb Roussard Is Will’s Dad

During Will Trent season 3’s penultimate episode, Will finally learned who his biological father was, and it wasn’t who anyone thought it would be. No one could have guessed his identity, given that we had never met him before. Nevertheless, in a sequence of events that seemed like fate, Will discovered that his birth father was a man named Caleb Roussard.

Will’s dad wasn’t that far from him all these years, as he was the sheriff of a small town outside of Atlanta. They were assigned to work together on a case and didn’t exactly make a good first impression on each other. Caleb didn’t want help from the GBI in Will Trent season 3, episode 17, and the older man’s cold shoulder frustrated Will.

However, everything changed when their blood contaminated the crime scene. They had to give samples so that the forensics team could differentiate whose blood belonged to whom, and with them, they realized that Caleb was Will’s father. So, a seemingly random blood test led to Will finding his father, whether he liked it or not.

James Ulster Should Return In Will Trent Season 4 To Give Will Closure

Ulster Claimed To Be Will’s Father

Will and Caleb got past their apprehension about getting to know one another in the Will Trent season 3 finale. The protagonist agreed to have dinner with his father and meet his family. However, while Will’s willingness to let Caleb in is a great sign for his character development, it also means that he should revisit a ghost from his past — James Ulster.

Ulster, the serial killer who murdered Will’s biological mother, previously claimed to be his dad. Will refused to believe it, but he also didn’t want to take a DNA test because he was scared that the villain was right. Now, though, Will knows for certain that Ulster was lying.

So, when season 4 premieres, the ABC cop show should bring Ulster back so that Will can confront him. He could finally get closure to help him heal from this trauma. Based on everything Will went through in Will Trent season 3, he certainly needs to work through his issues, and meeting with Ulster could help him move forward.

ABC is holding Will Trent season 4 for midseason, meaning it won’t premiere until January 2026 at the earliest.
