‘I Love Lucy’ (1951-1957)

Lucille Ball was always larger than life — really! Although she was two inches shorter than Desi Arnaz, they appeared the same height when she wore heels, so Desi had lifts put in his shoes! He was a “Cuban with a Latin male’s pride,” their son Desi Arnaz Jr. said, adding that he used to call them dad’s “elevator shoes.”

‘The Donna Reed Show’ (1958-1966)

“We have proved on our show that the public really does want to see a healthy woman, not a girl, not a neurotic, not a sexpot,” said Donna Reed, who butted heads with feminists who felt her show promoted a stereotype of the too perfect wife and mother.

Donna disagreed in a 1964 interview, noting that she was “fed up” with “stories about kooky, amoral, sick women.”

‘Father Knows Best’ (1954-1960)

The Anderson family’s home showed up on a lot of classic sitcoms! It was Mr. Wilson’s house on Dennis the Menace and belonged to Major Anthony Nelson on I Dream of Jeannie. The Columbia Studios Ranch, which was demolished in 2023, also appeared on Hazel, Bewitched, The Monkees and The Partridge Family.

‘The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet’ (1952-1966)

Ozzy was actually a driven businessman who prevented his sons from going to college so they could stay on the show. Mom Harriet was a former showgirl who liked to party!

‘Lassie’ (1954-1973)

June Lockhart recalled that Lassie, who was a male, was frequently excused from the set for naps.

“Only humans can be expected to work 14 or 15 hours a day,” she said. “Dogs sleep a lot.”

‘The Danny Thomas Show’ (1953-1965)

The television series’ original title, Make Room For Daddy, came from Danny’s real home life. The entertainer’s children slept in bed with his wife, Rose Marie, when he traveled. When he came home, she’d tell them to literally “make room for daddy!”

‘The Honeymooners’ (1955-1956)

Jackie Gleason rejected Audrey Meadows for Alice, reasoning that she was too pretty for the role.

“I knew I was right for it,” Audrey told The Tampa Tribune. “So I hired a photographer to come to my apartment early in the morning when I would look half- asleep.”

After sending Jackie a new photo with no makeup and drab clothes, she got the job!

‘Leave It to Beaver’ (1957-1963)

“Hugh [Beaumont] was a Methodist minister,” Jerry Mathers, a.k.a. Beaver, told Closer of his onscreen dad. The preacher spent his ministry years helping alcoholics on L.A.’s skid row.

“Although he was very happy to be an actor, he missed that,” said Jerry.
