Serena Williams and her husband Alexis Ohanian recently looked back on their first date, which happened a few years ago. The 23-time Major winner hit it off immediately with the American businessman, helped by some common interests.
ESPN+ has released an online docu series titled “In the Arena: Serena Williams” which includes ten episodes detailing some of the 42-year-old’s most important career moments. Her husband posted a short clip from one of the episodes on Instagram on Thursday, August 22, in collaboration with ESPN’s women’s sports handle.
According to the post, Williams and Ohanian had exchanged a few messages, which included the latter asking the 23-time Grand Slam winner to go out on a date, and the latter responding she would bring her agent along. The two also talked about their first date, with the Reddit co-founder recalling how Williams’ agent Jill Smoller grilled him with various questions.
“Serena, her assistant, her agent, and then me on the other side of the table. And they just bombarded me with questions,” Alexis Ohanian said. “It was like two hours of interrogation and questions. Do I have kids? Am I married? All this, like, every, like, nothing was off limits.”

The post also included a reference to Ohanian talking about “Marvel” on their date, which Williams said won her over.
Serena Williams recalls first date: “During dinner, he started talking about Iron Man and Marvel, that’s the way to my heart”
Serena Williams, while talking about her first date with Alexis Ohanian, said that the latter brought up Marvel, which has produced a variety of superhero fiction content over the years, also impressed her. The 23-time Major winner’s agent, Jill Smoller, added that he was happy about this interest that the two seemed to share.
“During dinner, he started talking about Iron Man and stuff, and Marvel, and that’s the way to my heart,” Williams said.
“I mean, it was so fascinating because they both loved the same things. He was into sci-fi and cartoons and superheroes,” Smoller said. “I’m like, ‘Jesus, she finally can talk to someone who likes the things that she does.'”
Ohanian, on his part, was happy about passing Williams and her team’s “test.”
“And I guess I passed the test so that the next day I texted her, and I was like, ‘Hey, look, last night was fun, but I’m going to pick you up, and we’re going to spend the day together in Paris, and it’s just going to be us,'” Ohanian said.
Williams met Ohanian at her hotel accommodation during the Italian Open in 2015. The two started dating soon after and became parents to their first child, Olympia, in September 2017. They married each other a few weeks later in an intimate ceremony in New Orleans.
