Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian have been married for seven years and share two children together – but the Reddit co-founder had to pass the test on their first date.
Tennis superstar Serena Williams and her team “interrogated” her now-husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, during their initial date. The couple, who have been happily married for seven years and are parents to two daughters.
Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. was born in September 2017, before they welcomed Adira River in August 2023. The pair shared an amusing anecdote in the latest episode of Williams’ ESPN+ docu-series, “In The Arena”.
Ohanian recalled how he was grilled by Williams, her agent Jill Smoller, and her assistant on their first date. “Serena, her assistant, her agent, and then me on the other side of the table, and they just bombarded me with questions,” he said.
“It was like two hours of interrogation and questions. Do I have kids, am I married? Nothing was off limits.”
Smoller admitted to trying to get all the information about Ohanian right away. Williams remembered how Smoller directly asked Ohanian about his relationship status.
“Jill asked him straight up like, ‘What’s up with your girlfriend? ‘ and he’s like, ‘I don’t have a girlfriend,'” Williams recounted. “He was saying that he had broken up with her. It changed things when he said that because I was like, ok, now he’s not being this beast.”
The Reddit co-founder even revealed the original text exchange between them, where he proposed: “Look, let me take you out to dinner.”
Williams, in her ever-practical approach, responded: “Okay, but I’m gonna bring my agent and my assistant.”
