Behind the laughs and iconic catchphrases of The Big Bang Theory, one of the show’s biggest stars was secretly fighting through the darkest chapter of her life.
In September 2010, just before Season 4 began filming, Kaley Cuoco (Penny) suffered a horrific horseback riding accident. An experienced rider, Kaley was thrown from her horse and suffered a serious leg fracture. The injury was so severe that doctors warned amputation might be necessary if surgery didn’t go well.
Thankfully, the surgery was successful — but Kaley’s road to recovery wasn’t easy. She had to stay off her feet for weeks, forcing her to miss two early episodes of Season 4.
But here’s where things get really impressive: when she returned, the show’s writers and crew pulled off a TV magic trick. They hid her cast on screen, placing her behind kitchen counters, seated on the couch, or holding props to mask her limited mobility. The audience had no idea anything was wrong — and that’s a testament to how skillfully the production team worked around her condition.
Kaley later called the experience “the darkest, scariest time” of her life, but also one that gave her a deep appreciation for her health, her life, and her career.
Looking back at Season 4, you might now notice the subtle ways they disguised her injury — but at the time, viewers barely noticed a thing.
