“She Disliked It, Leonardo DiCaprio Wasn’t Fond of It”: Kate Winslet Urged James Cameron to Cut Her Scene from Titanic

James Cameron’s 1997 film Titanic starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet is described as an undeniable achievement for the Canadian filmmaker. Along with winning 11 Oscars, it was the highest-grossing film for 12 years before Cameron’s 2009 film Avatar took the top spot. While the film gave its stars worldwide recognition and immense success as an actor, there were some things that they were not very comfortable with.

Spit like a man scene from Titanic (1997)
The Oscar-winning director shared during an interview that the lead stars of the film, along with many others, did not like one of the scenes in the movie. However, despite their objection to that scene, he decided to keep it in.

Kate Winslet Hated One of Her Scenes in Titanic

Titanic follows Jack and Rose who meet on the ship and fall in love. While the film continues to captivate audiences with moments of beauty, humor, love, and much more, there is a scene that many demanded the director omit from the final cut.
James Cameron once shared that Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio were not very fond of the scene in the film, where Jack teaches Rose to “spit like a man.” Not only the actors, but the Avatar director also shared that many people involved in the production did not like the scene as well.

“The president of my company (Paramount) begged me to take it out. She hated it,” he said. Cameron said that Winslet shared her dislike for the scene when she read it the first time. He also shared that everyone disliking the scene caused his higher-ups to ask him to remove the scene.

Kate Winslet Used it to Improvise One of Her Scenes

Despite everyone’s objection to the spitting scene, James Cameron was able to convince them to film the scene and keep it in the final cut. “I finally got them to fall in love with it. It’s probably the second or third highest-rated scene in the film,” he shared.
And it seemed to work out for Kate Winslet, who later took inspiration from the same to improvise one of her scenes later in the film. After the ship starts sinking, Jack and Rose try to run away from Billy Zane’s character Cal. As he grabs Rose, she spits on him to break free and runs away.

The scene reflects the earlier spitting scene from the film. However, originally The Reader actress was not supposed to spit on Zane. The original scene included Rose jabbing Cal with a hairpin to make him release her.
But Winslet improvised the scene at the last moment and did not tell her co-star about it. This led to a genuine shock and disgusted reaction from The Phantom actor.
