It’s a fundraiser organized by Jan Moran, founder of the Sarnia-Lambton chapter of Mrs. Roper’s Romp, an organization where members dress up like the character from the 1970s TV show Three’s Company for parades, community events and fundraisers.
“I just thought it would be hilarious,” Moran said about the car wash fundraiser.
“Roper’s Romp is, like, huge all over the world,” she said.
She started the Sarnia chapter a year ago after discovering the group online, and the Women’s Interval Home has been its charity of choice. Helen Roper, a character played by the late Audra Lindley on Three’s Company and a spinoff, The Ropers, was known for her curly wig and colourful caftans, costumes Roper’s Romp members copy when they gather.

Moran and her friend, June Weiss, dressed up as Helen when they visited businesses last month to drop off posters and gather donations of supplies for the car wash running Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the association on Michigan Avenue.
“The response was overwhelming,” Moran said. “It was fantastic.”
About 10 members dressed as Mrs. Roper are expected to help out Saturday, along with volunteers from the Women’s Interval Home.
“A bunch of us are going to have our orange wigs on and caftans, and wash cars,” Moran said.
“We’re hoping to have two stations set up,” she said. “I hope it’s a fun day for everyone.”
The cost of a wash is a $5 donation. Donations of new towels for the home, as well as lunch food items for children staying there, also will be accepted.

The association will have live music in the parking lot, as well as hot dogs and hamburgers available to purchase, she said. A couple of cutouts of photos of the Stanley character, Helen’s husband on the show, will be part of the decorations, Moran said.
About 30 Mrs. Ropers walked with the chapter when it took part in last year’s Canada Day parade, she said.
The chapter, which has about 50 members in total, holds events about three times a year. The retired school secretary said she likes to show younger folks “how great it is to have fun and support your community.”
“All the women love it because no one knows who you are” and “you’re so comfortable and it’s just fun,” she said about the costume.

Moran said she was able to make contact with Lindley’s daughters through social media.
“They said she would have been so proud to know that her character brought all this joy and excitement.”
