Donnie Wahlberg’s cast on Boston Blue is expanding with another member of the Reagan family coming over from Blue Bloods.
After 14 seasons, the popular CBS procedural was canceled, but its future remained open-ended. In 2025, it officially returned as Boston Blue, centering instead around Donnie’s Danny Reagan as he moved to Boston from New York City to support his son Sean.
Other members of the Blue Bloods family have returned, from Bridget Moynahan as Erin Reagan to Marisa Ramirez as Maria Baez. And now another member of the family will be back, too.
In a coming episode of the show, slated to air in April, it was previously confirmed that Len Cariou, who played Commissioner Henry Reagan for the show’s entire run, will make a cameo.
After being spotted in the midseason trailer for Boston Blue, Len, 86, finally directly addressed his “fun” return during a conversation with People, in which he added: “It was great to see Donnie and meet the new great-grandchild.”
Len referred to the show’s decision to recast Danny’s son Sean. For Blue Bloods, Sean was played by Andrew Terraciano. However, in the spin-off, Mika Amonsen was recast as a more grown-up Sean who’d entered the police force.
Sean’s older brother Jack Reagan was played by Tony Terraciano on the original show, although with his character now confirmed to be working in Africa with Doctors Without Borders, it’s likely he won’t be returning for Boston Blue anytime soon.
Back in December, the show’s EP Brandon Sonnier didn’t reveal which other members of the Reagan family would return outside of Erin. “We can tell you that Erin will not be the only one, but that’s all we’re allowed to say,” he told TV Insider.
The show’s cast will expand, however, with more members of Boston Blue’s Reagan equivalent, the Silver family, with the show’s co-creator Brandon Margolis confirming that “there are new characters that will show up. We will meet more members of the Silver family, and we will see members of the Reagan family we have not yet seen.”
“We’re still a fairly new show, and so our world is still growing and expanding as we get deeper into the characters’ lives.”
Sonnier added: “We now have a good handle on the characters we’ve introduced — drawing a full picture of who the Silver family is and how the Reagans have integrated into that family.”
“Now that the groundwork has been laid, the second half of this season is just a full-on exciting exploration of how these relationships grow. How does this family adapt to the environment that’s sort of changing around them as the Reagans have come in? The back half of this season has been some of the most exciting television that I’ve ever been a part of.”
