Shonda Rhimes is teasing what’s to come on the second part of Bridgerton.
During an appearance on Today on Tuesday, June 4, the Emmy-nominated show creator, 54, revealed that the ending of the show’s third season made her emotional.
“We’re very secretive about it but I will say it is sexy and surprising in many ways,” she shared. “And also, I cried at the end, I found it very moving — and I don’t always cry. So I really go into it.”
She added the remaining episodes of the third season are “a beautiful story.”
Rhimes’ comments come after the trailer for the second half of the season was released on June 3. In the clip, Colin (Luke Newton) and Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) shared the happy news of their surprise engagement but trouble is brewing.
Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie) threatened to reveal Penelope’s most treasured secret — that she is Lady Whistledown — to her brother. “He will find out,” Eloise warned her former best friend in the trailer, after Penelope begged, “Eloise, please do not tell him.”
“Until he knows the real you, he cannot possibly love you,” Eloise says later in the clip, while Penelope insisted, “Colin cannot discover my secret. Whistledown is power.”
Colin grew suspicious of his betrothed, too, asking Penelope, “Is there some secret you are not telling me?”
“Colin, I can take care of myself,” Penelope rebuffed, prompting her future husband to wonder, “Then what good am I to you?”
During an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show last month, Rhimes shared that the third installment of the hit Netflix show is “probably one of our sexiest seasons.”
“Season 3 is good,” she shared. “I just love the couple that we’re dealing with, you know, Colin and Penelope are people that we’ve already known. We’re not bringing anybody new. We’ve been watching them all these seasons. And so now we really get to see them get together. Plus, Lady Whistledown finally gets her do and I love that.”
“It’s really a season about, you know, people who are wallflower flowers, the shy people like coming out of their shell and that’s exciting,” she continued.
When asked about inspiration from the show’s steamy scenes, Rhymes shared they were her “wish fulfillment a little bit.”
