Simon Cowell, known for his tough exterior as a judge on America’s Got Talent and Britain’s Got Talent, has candidly shared how therapy has had a transformative impact on his mental health. For years, the 63-year-old TV mogul battled with depression, which he initially dismissed as just part of his personality. “I just thought, ‘That’s my character trait. I get down,’” he admitted, reflecting on his past struggles. However, Cowell’s perspective on mental health shifted dramatically during the Covid-19 pandemic, which served as a “real catalyst” for his decision to seek help. The pandemic led to heightened anxiety as Cowell witnessed several friends fall seriously ill, which worsened his mental state and left him gripped by fear of contracting the virus himself.
During this period, Cowell found himself in a constant state of worry, isolating himself at home in Los Angeles, unsure about his future projects and the fate of his shows. On top of this, he suffered a major accident while riding an e-bike, resulting in back surgery that involved the insertion of a metal rod. This combination of health scares and personal challenges made Cowell realize he had been neglecting his mental well-being. “I’d looked after my body through diet and exercise, but what have I done for my mind?” he asked himself. That question led him to seek therapy after learning about its positive impact from friends who had undergone their own sessions.
Initially feeling awkward and unsure, Cowell sat down with his therapist, admitting that he didn’t know where to start. But in just 20 minutes, he felt an immediate sense of ease. “It was like I’d known him for 10, 20 years,” he recalled, praising his therapist for creating an environment where he could be open. Reflecting on the experience, Cowell expressed how therapy has been a “super positive effect” on his life. He even shared with friends that he wished he had sought help much earlier in life. “It’s like a weight has lifted off my shoulders,” Cowell said, underscoring the profound impact therapy has had on his mental health. His openness about his journey serves as a reminder of the importance of mental wellness and seeking support when needed.
