Simon Cowell has been getting a lot of heat for his plan to find the next One Direction. The former X Factor judge, known for putting together the most successful boyband of the last few decades, had a plan to recreate the One Direction phenomenon with a reality show called The Midas Touch to find a new band.
Simon’s goal with this was both to find another group to make him money and to correct some mistakes he believes he made with One Direction. However, his initial plan hasn’t worked out, and he’s now in the process of changing the show’s premise.
Simon Cowell Scraps Reality TV Show To Find New Boyband
It soon became clear to Simon Cowell that he could never recreate the magic of One Direction’s success, and that, added to the negative reception from fans, led to the X Factor mogul revamping the project.
“Rather than focusing on the creation of a boyband capable of going on to massive success, the focus is now much more on him,” an insider from the show revealed.
Apparently, after hosting auditions, he became disillusioned.
“His frustration is at the auditions where many of the singers turning up are cast-offs from bands that didn’t make it. But perhaps more crucially, Simon has been told to come to terms with the fact that maybe the era of the chart-topping boyband is over. It is devastating for him.”
“It’s going to be a documentary on Simon coming to terms with the fact the golden days of discovering boybands might be over,” the insider added. “It might be compelling viewing to watch his downfall after so many years as the star of Saturday night TV.”
Simon Cowell Regrets Not Owning The Rights To One Direction
Simon Cowell has recently expressed his regrets about how he left things with One Direction. Probably one of the reasons he came up with this reality TV show. He wishes he had owned the band’s name, so he could still make money from them even after their breakup. If he had, he could still use the band to make projects like “an animation or whatever.”
“The one thing I regret is I should have kept the name,” he said on The Diary of a CEO podcast. “I should have owned the name. That’s the problem. When you give an artist the name, it’s not yours. And that’s my only regret. So if you’re listening, I’ll buy it back from you.”
“If one of the band members, for whatever reason, say they don’t want to tour, it can stop the others [from] touring,” Simon went on. “So, if it was me who owned the name, it wouldn’t be a problem.”
Needless to say, fans didn’t like this, but he maintained that it was a good idea, and revealed that’s what he would do with his new boyband.
“Next time, that will be part of the deal. I have to own the name. They can still make most of the money, but I need to own the name,” he stated.
Now that the upcoming show’s focus has changed, there might not be a next time, but people now know what to expect about working with Simon Cowell.
