“So Help Me Todd” Inspired by Creator’s Real-Life Missing Husband Incident

The premiere of CBS’s new series “So Help Me Todd” has captivated viewers with its intriguing plot, but what many might not realize is that the show’s dramatic storyline is rooted in creator and executive producer Scott Prendergast’s real-life experiences.
In the debut episode, Joan (Marcia Gay Harden) turns to her son Todd (Skyler Astin), who is struggling to find his path, to help her when her husband disappears without a trace. Prendergast revealed to TheWrap that the plot is deeply personal. “There was a time in my early 30s when my life was falling apart as I was trying to break into entertainment,” he explained. “I had just turned 30 and was facing a lot of challenges.”
After moving back to Portland from New York and experiencing friction with his mother over his career choices, Prendergast decided to relocate to Los Angeles to work on an independent film. This decision led to a major argument with his mother, resulting in a temporary estrangement.
Things took a turn when Prendergast’s mother called him about her husband going missing during their trip planning. Prendergast quickly became involved, spending two weeks helping his mother search for her husband around Portland. He eventually resolved the situation locally, a dramatic experience that inspired “So Help Me Todd.”
Prendergast envisioned a show where a mother and son, with the mother as a lawyer and the son as a private detective, team up to solve crimes, blending elements of “The Good Wife” and “Moonlighting.” Despite his mother’s initial reservations about their story being adapted for TV, she is supportive of his success and thrilled with Marcia Gay Harden playing her character.
Although the series is based on real events, many details have been fictionalized. The setting in Portland and several references to the city reflect Prendergast’s personal background, adding authenticity to the show. His mother, though nervous, is excited about the portrayal and the show’s success.
