‘So Many Surprises’: Blue Bloods Star Shares First Promo & Premiere Window for Boston Spinoff

Blue Bloods fans haven’t seen the last of Donnie Wahlberg’s Detective Danny Reagan. The actor will be back as the fan-favorite character for the upcoming offshoot Boston Blue.

Wahlberg recently shared the first promo for Boston Blue, featuring archive footage of the actor as Danny Reagan from Blue Bloods, on Instagram. The promo confirms that Boston Blue will be part of CBS’ Fall 2025 schedule as opposed to being saved as a midseason replacement. Wahlberg also teased what Blue Bloods fans can expect from the Boston-set offshoot, writing in the post’s caption, “So excited to carry on the tradition, to share so many surprises, to answer some unanswered questions and to welcome all of you — to [Boston Blue]! The next chapter in the [Blue Bloods] legacy begins. I can’t wait. See you CBS fall!”

CBS first teased a spinoff to Blue Bloods back in July 2024, with CBS Studios President David Stapf confirming that there had been discussion about extending the brand beyond the mothership series. “We don’t have anything that’s going to be in development soon but it’s a brand, a title and a show that is beloved,” Stapf said at the time. “We’ve got to get it right so we’re taking our time and trying to figure it out, okay, what is the next iteration of Blue Bloods? We have a whole season to go where we intend to celebrate it all season long as to how good that show is, so there’s still time for us to figure that out.”

Boston Blue Wasn’t Conceived as a Blue Bloods Spinoff

In February 2025, it was reported that Wahlberg would reprise his role as Danny Reagan in Boston Blue, which will send his character to the titular Massachusetts city. Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis created Boston Blue, which will see Danny Reagan taking “a position with Boston PD. Once in Boston, he is paired with Detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.”

Surprisingly, Boston Blue was not conceived as a Blue Bloods spinoff, with Sonnier and Margolis first pitching the cop drama to CBS as a standalone project following a family of police officers in Boston whose eldest daughter gets partnered with a new transfer from the LAPD. It was only after a script was ordered (and subsequently well-received) that the idea came to set Boston Blue in the Blue Bloods universe. Wahlberg, who is from Boston, is also attached to the series as an executive producer.

Blue Bloods wrapped up its 14-season run on CBS back in December 2024. Created by Robin Green and Mitchell Burgess, the long-running police procedural drama series focused on several members of the Reagan family, a Catholic, Irish-American family with a history of working in law enforcement in New York City. Tom Selleck led the main cast as New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan, with Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, and Will Estes portraying his character’s adult children. Len Cariou, Marisa Ramirez, and Vanessa Ray also starred throughout the show’s decade-plus run.

Blue Bloods is available to stream on Paramount+. Boston Blue is set to premiere this fall on CBS.
