Star Wars is bringing its original and prequel trilogies together with an exciting crossover battle. Set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, a new Marvel Comics preview features a team of Rebel heroes including Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian on a critical mission for the Alliance. To that end, they soon face one of the coolest and most dangerous battle droids from the prequel era.
As seen in the new preview for Marvel Comics’ upcoming Star Wars #46 by Charles Soule and Madibek Musbekov, Mon Mothma has been kidnapped and the Rebellion is desperately trying to bring her back before she’s ransomed to the Empire. Thanks to help from Lando who recognized the Scarabi mercenaries who took the key Rebellion leader, a small team is featured investigating one of the Scarabi’s safehouses in the new preview when they’re attacked by a classic Destroyer Droid:
Having been left as a brutal booby trap, it’s always exciting to see elements from the prequels and Clone Wars eras popping up years later during the events of the original trilogy. As such, Chewbacca, Lando, and even the future father of the sequel trilogy’s Poe Dameron battling a prequel-era Droideka is quite a surprising and unexpected moment in the Star Wars timeline.
The Rebellion Is In Crisis With Mon Mothma’s Recent Kidnapping

Demanding 200 million credits for Mon Mothma’s safe return, it’s confirmed that the mercenaries’ price would absolutely bankrupt and end the Alliance. As such, a risky rescue mission is the only option the Rebellion has on hand, especially because the Scarabi already promised they’ d ransom Motham to the Empire should they prove unable to meet their price. This would be disastrous considering just how much Mon Mothma knows about the Rebellion’s operations and all that she could reveal were she to break during Imperial torture sessions.
It’s worth noting that Mon Mothma is safe with the Rebellion during the events of Return of the Jedi. As such, one can assume she’ll eventually make her way back to the Alliance and her role as their leader. However, it’s not yet clear if it will be through payment via some untapped source of credits or by this upcoming attempt at a rescue mission seen in this preview.

He’s Technically Still on Trial
Either way, one also has to remember that Lando has currently been on trial for his recent betrayal of the entire Rebellion, having sold key secrets to Jabba the Hutt to save the life of his friend Lobot. That said, he was the only one who recognized the Scarabi mercenaries and had leads on their whereabouts. This may provide Lando with the opportunity he needs to get back in the Rebellion’s good graces when the full issue is released, assuming he and his fellow Rebels successfully take out this Destroyer Droid and find Mothma .
