It can be tough work to keep a show on the air these days. Countless factors can cause a network to drop a series even when it has incredibly passionate and vocal fans. The seventh season of ABC’s Station 19, the spin-off of long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, was revealed to be its final season back in December, causing shocked and upset fans to once again create an online petition in support of its renewal.
Just like when Our Flag Means Death was suddenly canceled following its second season, ABC announced that the latest season of Station 19 would be its last back on December 8, 2023. And, just like with the crew of the Revenge, fans swiftly went to work trying to save their favorite show. An online campaign began, including a petition that has since garnered over 66,000 signatures at the time of writing. The petition cites the excellent work Station 19 has done to explore issues of race, sexuality, and discrimination on primetime TV as the main reason the show should be revived.
From ABC’s side, the decision to cancel Station 19 seems largely due to the success of another show that the network recently acquired. With 9-1-1 making the move from Fox to ABC this spring, ABC would effectively be in competition with itself. Both Station 19 and 9-1-1 are produced by Disney-owned studios and would air on the same network, so the decision was made to keep the series with the higher ratings and drop the other. In this case, that left Station 19 fans out in the cold.
With that in mind, it’s difficult to see ABC reversing its decision to cancel Station 19, regardless of the success of the fan petition. It is more likely that the series will find a home somewhere else to complete its run, though that would take a very large investment for a network considering that Studio 19 would be in its eighth season and have passed 100 episodes by then.
