Station 19 season 6’s biggest story developments focused on a few of the ABC show’s central characters, but the drama seems to have forgotten to put Andy front and center. Like its parent series Grey’s Anatomy, Station 19 always worked as an ensemble show, having multiple characters to work with and showcase their interactions with one another. But despite its nature as an ensemble drama, though, Station 19 also tended to put a spotlight on Andy Herrera’s private and professional life in the series.
So far, Station 19 season 6’s biggest storylines were Jack’s temporary departure from the fire department, Maya’s mental health crisis, Sully and Natasha’s forbidden relationship, and even Theo’s arson investigation into his old neighborhood’s fires.
There was also Andy’s momentous return to the firehouse, yet the series refrained from giving it too much focus. In fact, there’s a sense that Andy’s importance to the show has begun to dwindle, and perhaps not for the best.
Station 19 Season 6 Needs To Give Andy More Featured Storylines
The character who was once Station 19’s central protagonist now comes across as a supporting character, given that her story arcs have been rather limited in season 6. This feels particularly off-base because the drama always managed to focus on Andy in the past, even when other characters were experiencing particularly challenging dilemmas. Also, Station 19’s focus on Andy was consistent throughout the show’s first five seasons. Instead, now that Andy finally found her balance, Station 19 season 6 has sidelined her as a figure offering support to many other characters without her being the driving force of the story.
Andy’s support of her friends and coworkers was indubitably fundamental in Station 19 season 6, proving a point in relation to Andy’s multiple professional advancements and to the characters she actively helped. However, given how Station 19‘s preceding seasons leaned heavily on Andy no matter what was happening in her life, it seems rather surprising that it’s suddenly veered off in a different direction. The shift in focus in the way Station 19 portrays Andy makes season 6 clash particularly hard with what came before.
Andy Is Finally Worth Of Being Station 19’s Captain & Still Hasn’t Got It
As for how Station 19 can correct its course with Andy, becoming the captain could be the storyline best-suited for that task. Unlike Theo, who doubted his capabilities, Andy has already proven herself ready to be the firehouse’s captain. Between her overall stable reaction to learning Sully had lied to her and was indeed dating their fire chief and her supportive attitude toward Theo as interim captain, Andy has made it abundantly clear just how much she’s matured as a character. Indeed, the Andy from the show’s earlier seasons would have reacted harshly and impulsively to many of the challenges of Station 19 season 6.
Andy’s ability to be a team player even when she didn’t agree with Beckett helps make her the perfect candidate for Station 19’s captain. Even Andy’s sensible reaction to Eli and Travis hooking up spoke to her calmer attitude, showing Andy’s good judgment and earnestness encompassing all aspects of her personality. Andy refusing the interim captain position further demonstrated that she had an eye on the bigger, more permanent prize. This is a good sign that she’s willing to wait for the right moment to become captain. Hopefully, that can happen soon for Andy in Station 19.
