Stranger Things 5: Everything You Need to Know

We have an incoming transmission from Hawkins, Indiana: Stranger Things 5 will arrive later this year. Miss your favorite nerds? They’re back, ready (or not) for whatever Vecna has in store for them in the beloved series’ fifth and final season.

Here’s everything we know so far about Stranger Things 5, coming from series creators Matt and Ross Duffer and executive producer Shawn Levy coming this fall.

What’s Stranger Things 5 about?

The fifth and final season kicks off in the fall of 1987.

“Hawkins is scarred by the opening of the Rifts, and our heroes are united by a single goal: find and kill Vecna,” the official synopsis reads. “But he has vanished — his whereabouts and plans unknown. Complicating their mission, the government has placed the town under military quarantine and intensified its hunt for Eleven, forcing her back into hiding. As the anniversary of Will’s disappearance approaches, so does a heavy, familiar dread. The final battle is looming — and with it, a darkness more powerful and more deadly than anything they’ve faced before. To end this nightmare, they’ll need everyone — the full party — standing together, one last time.”

Matt and Ross Duffer previously told Tudum that they wrote a 25-page mythology document for Netflix back in Season 1 that delves into the lore of the Upside Down. “We were like, ‘We know what’s going on in the Upside Down, more or less, but we want it to be unknowable. We want it to be mysterious,’ ” Matt Duffer explained. “But they were like, ‘Yeah, but can you write it down?’ And so we wrote it all down.”

While the audience learned quite a bit about the Upside Down in Season 4, there’s definitely more to come in Stranger Things 5. “The last remaining questions that are answered in that document, we’ve punted a couple of those to have some big reveals in Season 5,” said Ross Duffer during Geeked Week in June 2022. “And that’s really going to affect what Season 5 is about.”

To be continued, it seems …

And while you wait for the show’s return, may we suggest a trip to New York to check out the Tony-nominated Stranger Things: The First Shadow play on Broadway? Or head to London to see it on the West End? The original stage play production opened on Dec. 14, 2023, at the Phoenix Theatre.
