Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone Spinoff Will Make History For The Western Franchise

Beth and Rip’s Paramount+ spinoff will mark history for the Yellowstone franchise. Even though the original Yellowstone series concluded late last year, the franchise’s most pivotal characters will all be moving on to new shows. Luke Grimes will reprise his role as Kayce Dutton for a CBS drama, which will debut next year, while Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser return for the reportedly titled The Dutton Ranch.

An exact premiere date for The Dutton Ranch has not yet been announced, but it is known that Hauser and Reilly will be joined by a few familiar faces. The fan-favorite performers, who respectively play Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton, co-star alongside the returning Finn Little as Carter. It was also recently reported that five-time Oscar nominee Anette Bening will be part of the main cast.

Collider reports that The Dutton Ranch will be filmed in Ferris, a small town that is 20 miles south of downtown Dallas. This is notable because it is the first time in the history of Yellowstone that a show is not filmed, at least partially, in Montana. It’s not clear, however, what this entails for the story and setting of the Beth and Rip spinoff.

What The Filming Change Means For Beth & Rip

The spinoff’s Dutton Ranch title was revealed alongside Bening’s casting, teasing that Beth and Rip will face tough times and will have to make tough decisions in an effort to ensure that their adopted son, Carter, grows up to be the man that he is meant to be. In the face of this, Bening will play Beulah Jackson, who is described as the powerful and charming head of a major ranch in Texas.

Ferris, Texas was previously reported to be the filming location of a new Yellowstone series, which now looks to be confirmed as the Beth and Rip spinoff. The show is filming under the working title, Rio Palo, which translates to “stick river” in Spanish.

The project hails from showrunner and executive producer Chad Feehan, who previously worked on Lawman: Bass Reeves, alongside fellow executive producers Taylor Sheridan, David C. Glasser, John Linson, Art Linson, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, Bob Yari, Michael Friedman, Chad Feehan, Christina Voros, Keith Cox, Hauser, and Reilly.

That list of names, whether it’s Sheridan, veteran Yellowstone director Voros, or even the lead actors themselves, should suggest the spinoff is in good hands, even if Beth and Rip’s new ranch dreams take them away from a setting that viewers have come to love. That may be part of the fun in the new project, if anything.

There is so much about The Dutton Ranch that is yet to be uncovered. That includes casting, which may better illuminate the story. As long as Reilly and Hauser are around, though, that’s the part that fans will likely look to is whether the Yellowstone supercouple is still going strong.
