Serena Williams remarkably won seven singles matches in her career without losing a single game, a feat termed a “double bagel.”
The tennis legend earned four of her 6-0, 6-0 victories in Grand Slam matches, with four of her double bagel wins coming against opponents ranked in the top 100.
Here, we look at the seven times Serena Williams achieved a double bagel during her staggering career.
1. Larisa Neiland – 1998 LA Women’s Tennis Championships 1R
Williams earned the first 6-0, 6-0 victory of her career at the age of 16 when she dismantled Latvian world No 90 Larisa Neiland in the opening round of the 1998 LA Women’s Tennis Championships. She went on to reach the quarter-finals of the event.
2. Barbara Schett – 2003 French Open 3R
In the third round of the 2003 French Open, Williams double bagelled world No 51 Barbara Schett, an Austrian who had reached a career-high ranking of seventh in 1999.
The then world No 1 went on to reach the Roland Garros semi-finals, where she was beaten by eventual champion Justine Henin in a contentious encounter.
3. Zuzana Ondraskova – 2007 Stuttgart Open 1R
In the opening round of the 2007 Stuttgart Open, Williams demolished 140th-ranked Zuzana Ondraskova of the Czech Republic, who had entered the main draw as a lucky loser.
The American, who was seeded sixth, reached the quarter-finals of the indoor hard-court event before losing to Svetlana Kuznetsova.
4. Anastasia Rodionova – 2011 Stanford 1R
Williams began her campaign at the 2011 Bank of the West Classic in Stanford by steamrolling world No 105 Anastasia Rodionova of Australia without losing a game.
An unseeded Williams went on to claim the title at the WTA Premier event, defeating third seed Marion Bartoli in the final.
5. Andrea Sestini Hlavackova – 2012 US Open 4R
In the last 16 at the 2012 US Open, Williams double bagelled Czech player Andrea Sestini Hlavackova, who was ranked 82nd in the world.
The American, who was the No 4 seed, went on to defeat top seed Victoria Azarenka in the championship match to win the tournament.
6. Edina Gallovits-Hall – 2013 Australian Open 1R
At the 2013 Australian Open, Williams hammered world No 110 Edina Gallovits-Hall of Romania 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round.
The tennis icon, who was seeded third, was beaten by No 29 seed Sloane Stephens in the quarter-finals.
7. Carla Suarez Navarro – 2013 US Open QF
The last and most astonishing of Williams’ double bagel victories came in the last eight of the 2013 US Open as she destroyed Carla Suarez Navarro, the world No 20 and 18th seed at the event. Spain’s Navarro would reach a career-high ranking of No 6 in 2016.
Williams, the top seed, went on to defend her US Open crown by defeating Azarenka in the final for the second straight year.
