The Conners Changes Timeslot Ahead Of Potential Series Finale

Ahead of The Conners’ possible cancellation, ABC’s most-watched comedy is unexpectedly changing timeslots as it moves much later for broadcast.

The Conners is moving its timeslot and the reason for it is quite peculiar. Roseanne‘s spinoff sequel has come a long way from its controversial beginning. Now, it is ABC’s most-watched comedy, a clear indication of how beloved the family is. As with the majority of scripted series, The Conners season 6 debuted late in the 2023-2023 TV season due to the historic dual Hollywood strikes of 2023. It has had some mini-breaks since it returned in the new year, but other than that, it has maintained its status quo.

Things are about to change, however, with ABC moving the Roseanne spinoff sequel to a new timeslot. According to a new report from TVLineThe Conners season 6 is losing its usual 8pm ET Wednesday block and is being pushed further to a 9:30pm broadcast. The reason for this reshuffle is Jeopardy! Masters taking over the 8pm slot for the remainder of the season. Instead of simply pushing the existing schedule, however, the network opts to move The Conners further back, airing after Abbott Elementary.

ABC’s Wednesday Primetime Schedule Starting May 1
Jeopardy! Masters 8pm ET
Abbott Elementary 9pm ET
The Conners 9:30pm ET

Will The Conners Really End With Season 6?

The Lanford Family May Be Saying Goodbye For Good

After some back-and-forth, current rumbles claim that The Conners season 6 may be its last. This is surprising, considering that it is ABC’s top-rated comedy, and there’s no other narrative factor that forces it to end like CBS’ Young Sheldon. That being said, it’s worth noting that several people involved with the show, including Dan actor John Goodman, floated the idea of ending the Roseanne spinoff sequel with season 6. It became a cause for concern for a while, but nothing came out of it, so it was eventually forgotten.

Cancelling The Conners sounds like a bad business move for ABC. This is especially true with Young Sheldon ending with season 7. Without its biggest competitor, the Roseanne spinoff sequel can finally take the top spot as the overall most popular family comedy-drama on network TV. Unfortunately, with no movement on contract negotiations this late in the season, the chances of the offshoot wrapping up at the end of its current run are getting higher. Neither ABC nor the people involved with The Conners have directly commented, and it’s unlikely that they will until something concrete has been decided.

If The Conners does really end with season 6, the show still has a handful of episodes left to address all lingering plot lines. In any case, the show has done a great job tying up several big plots, including the continued absence of David and the impending death of Bev. This means that the writers don’t have to cram a lot of big arcs before sending off the Lanford clan for the second time.
