The Family Matters House Will Be Demolished and Replaced by Condos
The house where the shenanigans of hit 1990s sitcom Family Matters ostensibly took place will soon be no longer. The home, located on Wrightwood Avenue in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, will soon go the way of many older houses in the neighborhood and be demolished to make way for a three-unit condo building. Although the majority of the series was shot on set, the home is perhaps a nostalgic image for fans who recognize it from the opening credits and establishing shots of the show.
Family Matters followed the story of a Chicago police officer, Carl Winslow, who was played by actor Reginald VelJohnson, and his family. This included Winslow’s daughter Laura and their next-door neighbor Steve Urkel, who was played by Jaleel White. As fans know, Urkel’s character would often pop over to pester Winslow and his clan. Coldwell Banker agent Lissa Weinstein, who spoke for the owners of the property, told DNAinfo that they will make sure to pay homage to the show inside the new condo building. “In honoring the site’s past, [the owners] plan to decorate the entry with framed photographs of the original house and the show’s beloved cast,” she said.
