The Fuller House Cast Gets Candid About the Olsen Twins and Season Two
I’ve been tracking season two of Fuller House ever since the pick-up was announced, so, yes, I’m a tad obsessed with the lives of the Tanners, Fullers, and Gibblers. And just when I thought I uncovered everything there was to know about season two, I got to visit the set and uncovered a big bombshell. (Don’t think I’m about to spoil it just yet, though. Keep reading!)
“Once season one was released and fans loved it, it was like, ‘OK, we got this. We know what we’re doing, and we’re having fun,” Jodie Sweetin says. “Now we know what the fans love, and we are giving them what they want.” Judging by the trailer and my set visit, what “they” want is holiday celebrations, epic family reunions, and a surprise romance.
At its core, though, the show is about the friendship between D.J., Stephanie, and Kimmy. It’s a relationship that extends to the actresses themselves. Candace Cameron Bure, Jodie Sweetin, and Andrea Barber are just as close off-screen as their on-screen counterparts, as evidenced by the many on-set meals they grab together and their dressing room gossip sessions. That’s where I caught up with the trio to discuss what’s different in season two, who may be coming back, and why everyone is so over talking about the Olsen twins. (And for a special treat, check out the video at the bottom—I quizzed the cast on their Full House vs. Fuller House trivia.)
Jodie Sweetin: It’s a trip because we were the first cast to be in these dressing rooms upstairs. They built them right before our show moved in here more than 20 years ago. It’s cool because I remember those halls; I remember those rooms. My dressing room now is Dave Coulier’s old dressing room. I just have these memories of going up and down those stairs as a 10, 11, 12, 13-year-old kid because we moved here for the last three seasons of our show. This is where I said goodbye to our show—on this stage. It’s a trip to be back.
Candace Cameron Bure: Jeff [Franklin] did it all, but we’ve always had so much music on the show. The Beach Boys [have come on]. Jeff just knew that because of our love for New Kids that was our go-to to try and get them on the show. He just worked on it and made it happen.
Andrea Barber: [The show] purchased two songs that they were able to sing and perform on the episode.
Glamour: Donnie Wahlberg was in New York shooting Blue Bloods, so clearly he owes you guys an appearance down the line.
Candace: We’re hoping! Of course we missed him, but the guys were so great on the show. They had so much fun and really enjoyed it. We didn’t really know to expect with them [as actors], but they were really good! I hope they’ll be recurring!
Andrea: They want to come back! Jordan Knight had the most fun. He wins.
Jodie: To watch Candace and Andrea get so excited over something that they loved so much was really fun. It’s like watching your older sisters get to have their best moment ever.
Glamour: Let’s rewind a second to last season’s finale. How did you guys feel about D.J. and Kimmy’s decision? (D.J. remained single and didn’t choose Matt or Steve, while Kimmy decided she wasn’t ready to remarry Fernando).
Andrea: I loved it. Life is about more than a man. It’s about what we want as women.
Candace: It was a smart way to end because of course we all love relationships and are invested in them, but I think it’s a big part of what the show is about. Obviously, it’s these women raising these kids, but it’s also about our personal lives too. It gives us somewhere to go on the show.
Glamour: This season, there’s a new character named C.J. and she is kind of involved with D.J.
Candace: Yeah, so there’s…Steve and C.J. (Connie Jane) are now a couple, but she’s a lot like [D.J.]. It’s a little bit funny because he gets this new girlfriend who happens to be a lot like me. It’s obvious there’s some romance that could have happened with D.J., but now it’s happening with C.J.
