The Game Of Thrones Jon Snow Spinoff: Rumors, Cast, & Everything We Know
A Game of Thrones sequel about Jon Snow was in development at HBO – here’s everything to know about the spinoff, including all news and updates.
A GoTJon Snow spinoff was reportedly in the works, with the long-rumored Game of Thrones sequel series exploring his life after season 8’s finale. Game of Thrones’ ending was divisive, to say the least, but it also appeared to be definitive. HBO has since put several Game of Thrones spinoffs into various stages of development, and they all seemed to fit this idea. Rather than sequels, HBO has been focused on developing prequels. House of the Dragon season 1 has finished, with season 2 on the way, set around 200 years earlier.
Other reported spinoffs tackle events that take place well before the War of the Five Kings, battle with the Night King and White Walkers, and the rest of Game of Thrones’ story — except for a spinoff focusing on Kit Harington’s Jon Snow. A Jon Snow spinoff happening was somewhat surprising but shows the continued reach of Game of Thrones and the need for streaming services to capitalize on well-established IPs as much as possible. The Game of Thrones spinoff show isn’t yet officially confirmed and its future seems murkier than ever.

Kit Harington Confirms The Jon Snow Spinoff Is No Longer In Development
The status of the Jon Snow-centric series was never very concrete, and though hopes were high that HBO would officially greenlight it, Harington has shut that door.
With the development of the spinoff up in the air for years, the latest news sees Kit Harington confirm that Jon Snow is not in development. The status of the Jon Snow-centric series was never very concrete, and though hopes were high that HBO would officially greenlight it, Harington has shut that door. In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant, Harington explained that “it’s off the table” citing the fact that they “couldn’t find the right story to tell.” While this doesn’t permanently eliminate the chance for a Jon Snow show, it isn’t welcome news.

I hadn’t really ever spoken about it, because it was in development. I didn’t want it leaked out that it was being developed, and I didn’t want the thing to happen where people kind of start theorizing, getting either excited about it or hating the idea of it, when it may never happen. Because in development, you look at every angle, and you see whether it’s worth it.
And currently, it’s not. Currently, it’s off the table, because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough. So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It’s firmly on the shelf.
The Jon Snow Is No Longer In Development
HBO Has Put The Spinoff On The Shelf
In June 2022, Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin confirmed via his blog that a Jon Snow spinoff was in development and that the series was pitched by Jon Snow actor Kit Harington himself. Martin stated he couldn’t reveal any of the writers or showrunners, but he did confirm that Harington brought in his own team and has signed on in a creative capacity. The series languished in mystery for over a year after that, until Kit Harington revealed in April 2024 that Jon Snow wasn’t in development anymore.
Harington explained that HBO had shelved the project because they couldn’t decide on the right creative direction to take the series. Though that is disheartening news for fans, it doesn’t necessarily mean a Jon Snow series will never happen. If other Game of Thrones spinoffs continue to succeed, the network might be more eager to resurrect Jon Snow once again.
Game Of Thrones Jon Snow Spinoff Cast
Which Game Of Thrones Actors & Characters Would Return?
As part of the initial report on Game of Thrones’ Jon Snow spinoff, it was revealed that Kit Harington would be returning. That made sense, given it’d be very difficult to recast him. No one else was confirmed among the Jon Snow spinoff cast, but it could have included Kristofer Hivju as Tormund Giantsbane, since he was with Jon at the end of Game of Thrones as was Jon’s direwolf Ghost.
Former Game of Thrones actor Liam Cunningham addressed the idea of Davos returning for the Jon Snow spinoff and joked that he sent Kit Harrington a message when the news was announced saying “Better Call Davos.” However, Cunningham insisted that, while he was open to the idea of returning, he was never officially approached.
Jon Snow Spinoff Story
What Was The Game Of Thrones Spinoff About?
The most immediate challenge facing the Jon Snow spinoff is what the story will be. Jon’s Game of Thrones ending saw him going back beyond the Wall with the rest of the Wildlings. The Jon Snow sequel will have to find some new conflicts for the Wildlings, whether that’s a new threat emerging, or more internal affairs over leadership, and whether Jon becomes the King-Beyond-The-Wall like Mance Rayder. It’s possible that more of Westeros could be dragged into whatever happens, but the billing as a Jon Snow spinoff does suggest the story will be focused more on the lands north of the Wall.
