The Ghosts Cast Shakeup That Would Change the Course of the Show Forever

Could it be the end for this “revolutionary” romance? With the signs pointing to Nigel leaving Ghosts in the Season 2 finale cliffhanger, viewers are bracing themselves to say goodbye to one half of the CBS comedy’s beloved couple.

Ghosts is CBS‘ sitcom following Samantha and Jay Arondekar, married New Yorkers who believe their dreams have come true when they inherit a beautiful country house from Sam’s great aunt, Sophie Woodstone. What they come to find, however, is that the house is inhabited by ghosts who have died in the mansion and are now bound to the area until they can reach the afterlife. While Jay can’t see or hear the ghosts, Sam can after a near-death experience.

Ghosts, which premiered in October 2021 and has since become one of CBS’ highest-rated comedies, ended its second season with a cliffhanger as one ghost moved onto the afterlife (and, presumably, left the show for good) without the series revealing which spirit that was.

Though the identity was a mystery, there were clues that nodded to Nigel Chessum as the spirit that leaves Ghosts. Nigel, played by John Hartman, is the leade of the British Revolutionary ghosts, three spirits who died in the Revolutionary War and occupy a shed on the mansion that used to be a barracks. Nigel died after he was accidentally shot by Isaac. The two also had been harboring romantic feelings for each other since they were live and started a relationship at the end of Season 1. So… is Nigel Chessum leaving Ghosts and what happens to John Hartman’s character? Read on for why Nigel could be the spirit that leaves Ghosts next.

Is Nigel Chessum leaving Ghosts? If the signs are correct, the answer is yes. The Ghosts Season 2 finale, “The Heir,” ended with a cliffhanger as sam notices a beam of light from the mansion’s roof, indicating that one of the ghosts has moved onto the afterlife. The episode doesn’t reveal which ghost is “sucked off” to the beyond heaven, however, there are clues that it’s Nigel.

Earlier in Ghosts Season 2, Sam gifts Isaac half of her $20,000 advance on the Higgintoot biography, which Isaac plans to spend on a new day bed. The plan leaves Nigel upset since the bed Isaac buys can only fit one person. The season continues with Sasappis, Flower, and Nancy all telling Isaac that he’s not ready to move forward in his relationship with Nigel.

Isaac later apologizes to Nigel and acknowledges his feelings around the bed incident. Isaac then fakes out Nigel by telling him that he doesn’t think they’re in the stage of their relationship to move in together before proposing to him. Nigel says yes and the two get engaged before moving together and using the advance to buy a king-sized bed that fits both of them.

So why does Nigel leave Ghosts? Well, througout the Season 2 finale, Nigel shows that he’s always been comfortable with who he is and knows himself fully, which makes him the perfect candidate to move onto the afterlife, per Collider. Isaac, on the other hand, still has some figuring out to do, especially after only coming out the year before. Given that the spirit who leaves in the Ghosts Season 2 finale needs to have a significant emotional payoff, it makes sense that that ghost would be Nigel. If Nigel is to leave, his exit would also be felt among the remaining spirits in the mansion, especially Isaac.

Brandon Scott Jones, who plays Isaac on Ghosts, also teased the future of Isaac and Nigel’s relationship in an interview with Entertainment Tonight in May 2023. And I would say, where the season is going is I think Isaac and Nigel are gonna take another step in their relationship that’s either really good or really bad for them. And I think it’s gonna happen almost, like, out of the blue. And I think it’s gonna leave some people a little like, ‘Whoa, I didn’t see that coming.’ So, I’m excited about that,” he said.

Ghosts is available to stream on Paramount Plus.
