The Good Doctor has been renewed by ABC for a seventh season ahead of its season six finale.
The medical drama series, which stars Freddie Highmore as Dr Shaun Murphy, is tied with NBC’s Quantum Leap as the top-rated entertainment series in the 10pm slot for the 18-49 age demographic (via TheWrap).
The critically acclaimed medical drama, which started in 2017, follows Shaun, a young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome who is recruited to work at the prestigious San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital.
Alongside Highmore, The Good Doctor cast includes Hill Harper, Fiona Gubelmann, Will Yun Lee, Christina Chang, Paige Spara, Bria Samoné Henderson and Noah Galvin.
The sixth season finale of the The Good Doctor is set for May 1.
“Shaun and Lea are heading to the delivery room and everyone from the hospital is also there — except for one very important person,” reads the official synopsis. “Meanwhile, a tragic accident involving Drs. Perez and Kalu pulls everyone away, including Dr. Murphy.”
A spinoff series titled The Good Lawyer is currently in development at the network. It centres on Joni, a 20-something lawyer who has OCD.
The character, played by Nancy Drew’s Kennedy McMann, was introduced earlier in the sixth season of The Good Doctor after Dr. Aaron Glassman hired a lawyer to represent Shaun when he finds himself in some legal trouble.
This spinoff also marks a return to TV for Desperate Housewives star Felicity Huffman, who plays Joni’s colleague Janet. The two characters’ relationship is said to mimic the partnership between The Good Doctor’s Shaun and Glassman.
