ABC’s hit medical drama The Good Doctor made its highly anticipated return to screens in October with season six. Although the premiere introduced Danica ‘Danni’ Powell (played by Savannah Welch) as a new resident, however, she could soon be fired after an intense feud with her boss.
The Good Doctor returned to screens with a number of major changes to the beloved medical team.
Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) moved ranks as he would no longer have to report to the senior Doctors as he clocked in on his first day as a reporting attendee.
This also meant he had the responsibility of watching over the new interns Danny Perez (Brandon Larracuente) and Danica.
Alex Park (Will Yun Lee) who was also promoted was quick to take Danny under his wing, after noticing the attention the intern drew from the nurses.
Although Shaun was happy to work with Dani, the trailer for episode six hinted at a major clash between the two.
During the clip, the Californa appeared to be going through a temperature spike when Shaun shared his concern about Dr Audrey Lim (Christina Chang) with Danni.
He said: “If she had the surgery Dr Lim would be better able to regulate that temperature.”
Danni responded: “I told her not to rush into it.”
Shaun immediately hit back: “I have much more surgical experience,” but Danni countered: “I have much more physical disability experience than you.”
As Lim was in a wheelchair, Danni was able to relate as the trailer revealed she had a prosthetic leg.
However, Shaun took to Dr Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff) and expressed his annoyance to the neurosurgeon, stating: “I don’t like her.”
Glassman brushed it off and said: “I work with people I don’t like all the time.”
Although Shaun sees the neurosurgeon as a father figure, he may take his concerns higher up and speak to the senior staff.
As a result, Danni may have to say goodbye to her future at St Bonaventure Hospital and face dismissal.
Ahead of the show’s return, the showrunner Liz Friedman spoke on the newcomers and hinted at a difficult dynamic between Shaun and Danni.
Liz disclosed: “ Perez is a soulful guy, he grew up on a farm, and he has a calm and holistic approach to medicine.
“But he is more complicated than he initially appears, he’s got some secrets in his past.”
As for Danni, Liz revealed she “has a strong sense of convictions.”
“She is former military, and she’s seen combat, so things that happen in this hospital that would alarm, upset or scare other people [do not upset her].
“And she’s going to have some real, complex [issues] with Shaun,” Liz told TV Line.
