We aren’t really sure how it makes sense, either.
The One Chicago crossover was a success by pretty much any metric. Fans rejoiced in seeing their favorite characters interact, and the way the franchise was able to integrate most everyone in a story that spanned three separate titles was masterful.
As with every three-part crossover, though, there was bound to be episodes that performed better and/or worse. The IMDb ratings for Chicago Fire, Chicago Med and Chicago PD were all surprisingly close, and separated by minuscule differences. The fan reaction to Chicago Med, however, was what surprised us the most.
Chicago Med had an 8.9 rating during the crossover

The medical drama was tasked with carrying the middle part of the crossover, and it wound up with the lowest IMDb user rating of its peers with an 8.9. Still an excellent score, but one that caught us by surprise given that Med also performed the best in terms of network viewership. By comparison, Fire and PD scored 9.0 and 9.1, respectively.
Chicago Med pulled a whopping 6.6 million viewers during “In the Trenches: Part II.” This was notably higher than Chicago Fire and Chicago PD, which drew 6.3 million and 6.4 million, respectively. Med is on an absolute roll in terms of viewership in season 10, so these stats make sense. On the whole, the medical drama is inching up on Fire in terms of being the most popular title in the franchise.
So what’s the deal with the low ratings? It’s inarguably bizarre that the most viewed episode in the crossover is the least praised by fans, but there are likely a few reasons for this discrepancy. For one, the Med cast is given the least to do within the crossover storyline.
Med took a backseat to other One Chicago shows

Characters like Dr. Archer (Steven Weber) and Dr. Caitlin Lenox (Sarah Ramos) stay busy, but by and large, the Chicago Med team takes a backseat to Fire and PD. Part of the reason is the lack of stakes for the characters. Some of the most notable moments during the crossover came from a genuine sense of concern that beloved couples would be separated.
Chicago Fire and PD had two characters a piece in danger. To further heighten the tension, these characters are engaged/married to other characters in the show. Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) and Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) were trapped underground while their signifigant others, Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney), scrambled to save them.
Med is doing a lot of things right, but it does seem like the fans want to see higher personal stakes for the characters moving forward.
