Elsbeth season 2 finally retired one recurring joke, but they better not reintroduce it for season 3. Elsbeth has always been a procedural, with the characters solving a murder every episode, but the CBS spin-off set itself apart early on. Unlike shows like Law & Order or NCIS, Elsbeth is also comedic.
The crime show will definitely be leaning into comedy, having announced that stars like Stephen Colbert will appear on Elsbeth season 3. Season 2 already included some laugh-out-loud funny moments, such as when Elsbeth’s son, Teddy, explained that New York City’s High Line is “just a very tall sidewalk.”
Plus, Elsbeth season 2 included a musical episode, something more often seen in comedies than dramas. Elsbeth’s comedic elements have been a lot of fun. However, there was one joke that was played out, and the show shouldn’t bring it back for season 3.
Elsbeth’s Jokes About The Lead Character’s Name Got Repetitive
Throughout season 1 and much of season 2, anytime Elsbeth met a new person, they’d comment on how peculiar her name was. Often, the murder suspects would give Elsbeth weird looks when she introduced herself or outright mispronounce her name. While this joke may have been funny the first few times, it grew tired.
Sure, Elsbeth’s name may not be common, but it’s not as crazy as the show made it out to be. The other characters struggled far too much with a name that simply isn’t that complicated. Plus, the joke was made too many times; eventually, it just didn’t land. Luckily, the show eventually abandoned the joke.
Of course, sometimes a joke gets better as time goes on. The more times Elsbeth leans over to make her presence known, the funnier it gets. However, the name joke didn’t work the same way.
Elsbeth’s Name Joke Should Stay Retired In Season 3
Elsbeth has many funny moments, so the show doesn’t need to rely on a played out joke anymore. The writers have come up with some incredible plot lines, especially the Judge Crawford investigation. Elsbeth has a very talented team, and it will be interesting to see what jokes and comedic moments they come up with for the new season.
The Elsbeth writers also have a lot of fun guest stars to play with in the new season. In addition to Colbert, Elsbeth season 3 will feature David Cross, the comedy legend known for his work on Mr. Show With Bob & David and Arrested Development. Amy Sedaris and Andy Richter will also be making appearances.
There’s plenty of room for comedy amidst all the murder, and the show no longer needs an overused joke. Elsbeth season 3 will definitely be one to watch.
