The Rookie Just Turned an Unexpected Character into a Villain — and the Twists Ain’t Done Yet!
The twists keep on coming! After the reveal that Monica from The Rookie was working with Dr. Blair London, fans are left with countless questions as to what the unexpected villainous duo could mean for the LAPD ahead of the Season 6 finale.
The Rookie ABC’s crime drama following John Nolan, a 45-year-old newly divorced man from Pennsylvania, who, after helping police officers during a bank robbery in his hometown, moves to Los Angeles to pursue a new career as a police officer with the Los Angeles Police Department. The series, which premiered in 2018, follows the personal and professional lives of Nolan and other officers, detectives, and sergeants with the LAPD.
Dr. Blair London (played by Danielle Campbell) was introduced in The Rookie Season 6 as a psychiatrist assigned to the LAPD to help Aaron Thorsen process the trauma of being shot and almost dying in the Season 5 finale. Later in the season, Sergeant Tim Bradford also starts to see her for counseling. Since her debut on The Rookie, fans have theorized that Dr. London wasn’t exactly who she seemed. Those suspicions were proved right at the end of Season 6 when the therapist was confirmed to be in cahoots with villain Monica Stevens. Read on for a refresher on who Monica on The Rookie is and what her connection could be to Dr. Blair London.
Who’s Monica on The Rookie and what’s her connection to Dr. London?
Who is Monica Stevens on The Rookie and what’s her connection to Dr. Blair London? Monica, played by actress Bridget Regan, is a recurring character on The Rookie who was introduced in Season 5 as the defense attorney for antagonist Elijah Stone. She was also previously engaged to lawyer Wesley Evers, the husband of Officer Angela Lopez. Monica made her debut in Season 5, Episode 6, “The Reckoning,” when Wesley ran into her during Elijah’s trial.
Monica took center stage in The Rookie Season 6, Episode 8, “Punch Card,” in which someone breaks into her house and attacks her. As the police came to her home, Monica grabbed a gun and shot the attacker in his foot. She then asked him whether he came to rob her or he was sent to kill her. He confirmed the latter, to which Monica responded by shooting his other foot.
Suspecting that the attacker was hired by a client and wanting to investigate the crime on her own Monica lied to the police and didn’t tell them her attacker was there to kill her. (The attacker later confirmed to the police on his own that he was there to kill Monica, though he didn’t tell them anything else.)
After the break-in, Monica and the attacker were both sent to the same hospital for their injuries. While there, Monica lied about being dizzy and having a concussion to stay longer at the hospital, so she could question her attacker. Before she could get him to tell her who wanted her dead, however, the police found Monica and escorted her away.
Monica broke back into her attacker’s hospital room later in the episode during a gang fight at the hospital, which left the police occupied. When her attacker still wouldn’t reveal whom he was hired by, Monica killed him. She was seen by Dr. London leaving his room.
Viewers then learn that Dr. London was the mole and the one who informed on the Metropolitan Division, which led to several officers getting injured in an explosion targeting Sergeant Tim Bradford ‘s old unit. Viewers also learn that Dr. London was working with Monica, though she seemed unsure now about her involvement in Monica’s plans because she was told no one would be hurt.
The episode ends with Mad Dog, who Bradford saw acting suspiciously with Dr. London earlier in the episode, jumping to his death from a rooftop. Before he killed himself, however, Mad Dog confessed to Bradford that the situation wasn’t meant to escalate as far as it did and no one was supposed to be hurt. He refused to reveal who he was working with, though he admitted that that person was the keeping of all of his secrets.
What happens with Monica and Dr. London?
So what happens with Monica and Dr. London. The preview for The Rookie Season 6, Episode 9, “The Squeeze,” which is a part of The Rookie‘s two-part Season 9 finale, Bradford is questioned over Mad Dog’s death, with investigators not believing that Mad Dog killed himself. The preview continues with Bradford telling Officer John Nolan that he needs to take over the investigation.
“He’s going to try to hang this around my neck, I need you to take over the investigation,” Bradford tells Nolan, who responds, “Into what?” Bradford replies, “Not what. Who. Blair London.” The preview ends with Nolan telling London that he’s not the one she needs to worry about. “I’m not the one you need to be afraid of. I’m your best shot at getting out of this alive,” Nolan says.
The main fan theory is that London has recording her therapy sessions with the LAPD and sending that information to Monica. “She been recording each meeting since the beginning. I guess her villain act really started ever since the clip where she turned off the camera after seeing Thorsen. Guessing sending everything to the lawyer for money?” a Reddit user wrote. “Not sure what kind of secret but I’m guessing Mad Dog revealed a lot of things about Metro, knew he was gonna lose his job & reputation.”
As for London’s motivation to work with Monica, some fans suspect money while others believe that Monica has blackmail on London. “I still think that Monica (or someone above her) has something on her and that is the reason why she is doing this. At the end she wont be villain,” a Reddit user wrote.
Others also criticized The Rookie‘s twist of making London a villain. “I don’t get how the therapist comes across as really put together and smart then turns into a childlike dumbass the second she’s with the Lawyer? completely character shift was odd,” a user wrote.
As for more fan theories, others also suspect that The Rookie will kill off Monica in the Season 6 finale. “I’m not really sure what Mad Dog, Tim or Thorson could have said during their sessions that could cause irreparable damage,” a Reddit user wrote. “However, based on the interaction between Mad Dog and the therapist in the hospital, it seemed like they were both conspiring on something malicious. From what I understand, Metro is a pretty reactionary unit and is called in when things could get dirty.”
She user continued, “I’m not sure what intel could be had unless it’s something linking back to Elijah since Monica is involved again. Ultimately, I think Monica ends up dead, which I think a lot of us are ready for that storyline to end. It’s been a bit since they’ve killed anyone off, and while she’s not a main character, she has a strong role at times.”
