“The Rookie” Season 7: The Secret Air Date Finally Revealed! Get Ready for Surprises!

John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) has come a long way since he became the oldest rookie at the LAPD. Now, he’s the rookie instructor training the rookies, so the title still works when the series returns for its seventh season on ABC in early 2025.

For Season 7, Parade spoke to showrunner Alexi Hawley, who shared his thoughts on what the season would look like now that it isn’t interrupted by strikes or COVID.

“I did roll in thinking that this season would be more episodic in nature,” Hawley says. “It’s not like it isn’t. We do so many things per episode that are unique to that episode. But, there’s a lot of storylines that we really do pull through multiple episodes here in a really dynamic way. That I wasn’t necessarily expecting, but there’s a lot of rich storytelling going on for all of our characters this year.”

When does The Rookie Season 7 start?

The Rookie will return on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 10 p.m. on ABC. With the midseason premiere, The Rookie should air continuously through the season finale.

“They’re going to go straight through,” Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich told TVLine. “And that kind of momentum of original episodes week-in and week-out is just a very powerful engine.”

“I will always cherish my time on The Rookie but couldn’t be more excited for what the future has in store,” Valentino wrote in an Instagram story on August 9. “I adore the friends and relationships made while being there. It was such an amazing opportunity and feel so lucky to have had the last 3 seasons. Thank you to the best fans in the world, I know I don’t talk much, but I appreciate you all so much.”

That said, Valentino did indicate he might return, writing, “You never know who may pop back up in the Mid-Wilshire Precinct. Until then, 7 Adam 19, this is Officer Thorsen, over and out!”

Parade asked Hawley if it was a possibility to see the return of Thorsen.

He says, “There’s a lot of stories that we tell. I think at the end of the day it felt like I knew I wanted to bring on some new rookies and it felt like we’d told a really dynamic story for Aaron. It doesn’t mean we’ll never see him again. He transferred to a different station. The way we wrap it up in the first episode is that he was trying to get away from the stigma of being a patient of Blair London, who was the corrupt police therapist, so he ultimately wanted to go someplace where people weren’t looking at him, because he fell under a cloud a bit at the end of last season.”

What happened in The Rookie Season 6 finale?

The Season 6 finale was jammed packed, bringing the 10-episode season to a thrilling conclusion with a cliffhanger in which Bailey’s abusive ex-husband Jason (Steve Kazee), along with Oscar (Matthew Glave), has escaped from prison and is coming for her.

But first, the episode continued the reign of Monica Stevens (Bridget Regan), the sinister lawyer who represents numerous criminals in Los Angeles. Monica has entrapped Dr. Blair London (Danielle Campbell), the LAPD therapist, to provide her with the confidences she learns in therapy. This information is then sold to the criminals that have Monica on their payroll. Years earlier, Monica had helped Blair when she ran over someone while drunk, and Blair has owed her ever since, which is why the shrink is indebted to the attorney.

But things are more life and death in this episode – Eric Ramsay (Neil Hopkins) is trying to kill Monica, so she creates a plan to take him down first. It begins with Oscar beating up Eric Ramsay’s top lieutenant but to get him to agree, she has to help Oscar and Jason break out of prison, which was easy-peasy for her.

Also part of her plan is to get money launderer Christian Bautista (Will Beinbrink) to send a hit team to the laundromat where Gundo (A Martinez) is waiting to collect $2 million from her in blackmail money. Then she is going to force Blair to travel with her to Argentina to meet with Ramsay’s benefactor.

In the meantime, Lucy Chen has been substituting as a nanny for Bautista and she gets wind of the operation at the laundromat, and the police show up and things blow up. One of the hit men tries to escape and Bradford jumps into the truck. When Bradford’s luck runs out, Lucy also jumps into the truck to save him.

In the intervening time, Nolan and Harper traveled to Argentina on a federal jet, and despite being told not to rescue Blair, Nolan can’t help himself and a shootout ensues. Blair is extradited back to the U.S. but Monica escapes.

It’s when Nolan is back home after having been shot in the butt in Argentina, that he and Bailey learn about the prison break.

Are there any spoilers for The Rookie Season 7?

Dewan misses the first few episodes because she was on maternity leave, so the Jason/Oscar recapture storyline will wait for her return to lean into the drama and the paranoia of there being an existential threat out there.

“With Jason I guess I can say that ultimately his storyline comes to a head in the first half of the season,” Hawley says. “The Oscar story is a longer conversation. But, yeah, no, it was very important to us to play that sort of fear of there’s something out there that’s dangerous and coming for me and my family.”

Adoption is also looking to be on hold for John and Bailey as Jason’s being free puts a cloud over Bailey’s safety.

“I think ultimately Jason being out there as a threat definitely stops the conversation,” Hawley says. “But we do get back into it later in the season, that conversation. Then, also, the real of them as candidates, honestly, for adoption as two first responders who have a tendency to end up in a lot of jeopardy. Yeah, we definitely come back to it.”

As for Chenford, while it’s true that Lucy still loves Tim, trust is a whole other issue. He’s going to have to work to get that back.

“Fans know that Tim did a bunch of that work trying to get back into her good graces,” Hawley says. “I thought it was super important that he understood that ultimately that sort of decision to engage or not engage was really hers to have. His understanding that the kindness she showed him after he broke her heart and blew up their relationship was something he was never going to forget and he was going to make it up in whatever ways she allowed, which I just thought was a really sort of beautiful idea from him.
