The Rookie Season 7 will not premiere in September 2024 (and we have a long wait)

September is supposed to be the time of year when shows return to broadcast networks. That’s not the case for The Rookie, with Season 7 not premiering in 2024 at all.

As September rolls around, TV fans everywhere get ready for the fall schedule. Things are looking different this September, with The Rookie Season 7 not on the list of shows premiering on ABC.

There have been a few changes to the fall schedule in recent years. These have been due to circumstances out of the networks’ control. The pandemic and the strike actions pushed premieres to November and into the midseason depending on the year.

This year is different. Most shows will return in September (or October if you’re following CBS shows). The Rookie Season 7, however, will not return in 2024 at all.

The Rookie Season 7 is being held for the midseason

ABC made a surprising decision in May 2024. Rather than putting The Rookie on Tuesdays in the fall, it opted to push the series back to the midseason. Will Trent was also given the same treatment.

Why? Well, that’s not clear, except for the fact that ABC has a packed schedule. It should come with some good news, though. While we have to wait, there won’t be any breaks in the schedule once it does air. The Rookie Season 7 has 18 episodes, which means a clear run from the middle of January to the middle of May without the need for a week off here and there.

What to expect in The Rookie Season 7

Due to the wait for the new season, it means we don’t have many details on what we can expect. What we do know is that there’s a cast change. Tru Valentino will not return as Officer Aaron Thorsen. It’s not clear how he’ll be written out, but moving to a new precinct or deciding the job isn’t for him could make sense.

There are two new cast members joining the season, though. Deric Augustine and Patrick Keleher will join as Miles and Seth. Very little is known about their characters, but they are likely new rookies.

While Alyssa Diaz and Mekia Cox have joked about a spin-off series, there isn’t one in the works. It was just a bit of fun between the two women.

Due to the way the season is longer than the last, the series will get to go back to some standalone stories as well as serialized elements. We’ll get to see more of the private lives of the cops, which will hopefully mean more of Lopez and Harper as parents as well as detectives.

Of course, Chenford fans want to see the two of them together. Nobody is saying they won’t get back together, but it’s not going to be immediate. They will have a lot to work through with the way Bradford walked away.
