The Rookie cast took on San Diego Comic Con 2025, and they brought with them one recurring actor, suggesting they’d return (and have a bigger story) in season 8. ABC’s police procedural has featured numerous notable guest stars over the years who have developed into more staple figures. This character in particular is one of them (they’re a bit controversial, though).
The Rookie season 8, which will consist of 18 episodes, won’t premiere until early 2026.
When the ABC series returns, it’ll have a lot of ground to cover. The Rookie season 7 ended with Monica making a deal for her immunity and Oscar getting away after kidnapping Nolan. Plus, Tim and Lucy still have to get back together, and others’ stories remain unfinished. Nevertheless, one more character and their arc will likely be added to the to-address list.
The Rookie SDCC 2025 Panel Features Zander Hawley’s Special “Daddy Cop” Performance
Hawley Stars As Rodge In The Rookie
Zander Hawley, who stars as Rodge in the crime drama, made a special appearance at The Rookie’s SDCC 2025 to perform his character’s infamous song, “Daddy Cop.” X user @ilsafxvst posted a short clip of Hawley singing to (aka serenading) Nathan Fillion on stage. “Daddy Cop” has become The Rookie’s unofficial anthem, making Hawley’s surprise appearance all the more exciting.
The Rookie introduced Hawley’s Rodge in season 5 when Nolan and Celina stumbled upon his band practicing in his garage. After noticing Nolan, Rodge started singing “Daddy Cop.” He seemingly made up the song on the spot, with Nolan serving as unwilling inspiration. Then, Rodge returned in The Rookie season 7 when he started dating Celina, much to Nolan’s dismay.
“Daddy Cop’s” Special SDCC Performance Hints At A Rodge’s The Rookie Role Continuing In Season 8
Rodge Left For Tour Ahead Of The Season 7 Finale
The Rookie’s SDCC panel revealed some season 8 teases, while Hawley’s “Daddy Cop” reenactment was simply a treat for the crowd. However, Hawley’s guest appearance suggests that he will reprise his role as Rodge in the show’s upcoming episodes. They likely wouldn’t have brought the actor/singer to SDCC 2025 if he weren’t somewhat involved in season 8, after all.
Rodge left LA in The Rookie season 7, episode 17, to go on tour. He and Celina didn’t break up, though, leaving the door open for his return. Given his ending in season 7 and Hawley’s appearance at SDCC, fans should expect to see Rodge reuniting with Celina (and maybe take their relationship to the next level) in The Rookie season 8.
