ABC‘s popular procedural cop series The Rookie is getting a second spinoff series thanks to Lionsgate Television and 20th Television.
The project is being written by The Rookie creator Alexi Hawley, and it will be set in the state of Washington. The story will center on “a male cop who is stepping into a new phase of life in his second act.”
It will also keep the major midlife change concept of the Los Angeles-set original series, which stars Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, who switched careers to become the oldest rookie in the LAPD.
This news comes as The Rookie is heading into its seventh season, which is set to debut on January 7th. The Rookie remains one of ABC’s most watched series that also has emerged as a top performer on streamer Hulu amid a surge in popularity among young viewers.
Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich said: “Fans are still discovering that show and will continue for years to come. That’s the staying power of a good drama.”
