Warning: This post is about the upcoming The Summer I Turned Pretty movie. It contains major spoilers for The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 and Jenny Han’s We’ll Always Have Summer.
Ever since it was announced that season 3 of The Summer I Turned Pretty was not the end of the series, but that we’d be getting a The Summer I Turned Pretty movie, fans have been eagerly anticipating news about the project — and we are collecting them all for you here.
In case you’re new here, The Summer I Turned Pretty ended its third and final season with a bang — with the series finale, titled “At Last,” clocking in at an hour and twenty minutes runtime. Even with that extended, feature-film-esque runtime, fans were left desperately wanting more of the Cousins Beach crew, specifically Belly and Conrad’s story.
On September 17, 2025, the same day that The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 finale aired, it was confirmed that Belly’s story is not over and will continue with a feature film. The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie was announced by Jenny Han herself at the special series finale celebration in Paris, France. With Jenny Han at the helm, Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video have greenlit the movie, which will serve as the actual conclusion of the YA phenomenon.
“The Summer I Turned Pretty has struck a chord with audiences everywhere, creating moments of joy, nostalgia, and connection that have made it a global sensation,” Amazon MGM head of film Courtenay Valenti and Vernon Sanders, global head of television at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, stated in a press release about the film. “We’re proud of the series’ extraordinary success and couldn’t be more excited to partner again with Jenny Han to bring fans an unforgettable next chapter.”

What is The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie about?

Specific plot details about the Summer I Turned Pretty movie are, of course, being kept under wraps, but Jenny Han did give out a major tease when announcing the project.
“There is another big milestone left in Belly’s journey, and I thought only a movie could give it its proper due,” Han said in a statement shared by Amazon. “I’m so grateful to Prime Video for continuing to support my vision for this story and for making it possible to share this final chapter with the fans,” she added.
The three seasons of The Summer I Turned Pretty were adapted from Han’s best-selling debut trilogy, and while the series remained relatively faithful to its original source, it also introduced and omitted key details.
Though we get to see more of Belly’s life abroad through the show (reminder, show Belly goes to France, while book Belly goes to Spain), the show leaves out a significant part of book three, We’ll Always Have Summer, which ends with an epilogue where Belly reads the letter Susannah left for her on the day of her wedding to Conrad. (Yes, the one she got in the show when she almost married Jeremiah, but didn’t get to open.)
Speaking to Teen Vogue‘s P. Claire Dodson at the series finale event in Paris, France, where the movie was later announced, Jenny Han elaborated on her decisions to leave out the beloved book epilogue and forego any engagement or wedding storylines in season 3, saying: “I think that, to me, this season was so much about Belly and Conrad reuniting and that’s what I really wanted to focus on to really give it its proper due.”
Now, a wedding does seem like quite a significant milestone left in Belly’s journey, but Jenny Han is always full of surprises and, knowing her, it probably won’t be the only thing on her mind for the movie.
Lest we forget, season 3 also ended with Steven, Taylor, and Denise on their way to San Francisco, and Jeremiah making a vow to learn to be on his own in Boston after kissing “D-nice.” Did they try long-distance? Are they all still there? These are all questions the movie will likely also address, even if it centers on Belly’s next chapter.

Speaking to Teen Vogue in November 2025, Sean Kaufman opened up about his own hopes for Steven and Taylor in The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie. “When the movie got announced, I was like, Oh, I wonder what story’s left to be told for Steven? I had to think, and I just kept coming back to him and Taylor (played by Rain Spencer). [I’d love to see] what their relationship looks like when it’s working toward being together, as opposed to staying afloat,” he said.
“I love a moment in a relationship when two people really commit to each other; the fights stop becoming ‘Are we gonna break up after this fight?’ to be ‘This is a fight because we’re working toward something together,’” Kaufman continued.
Who is directing The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie?
Jenny Han, the author of the original trilogy that the hit series is based on and the show’s creator, is on board to direct the film. Not only that, but she’s also co-penned the script with Sarah Kucserka. (ICYMI, Kucserka also served as an executive producer alongside Han, as well as co-showrunner throughout seasons 2 and 3.)
The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie will mark the second time Han takes the director’s chair for the franchise. The creator famously made her directorial debut on episode 5 of season 3 of The Summer I Turned Pretty, titled “Last Dance.” The long-anticipated episode featured Conrad’s POV and the now-infamous peaches scene.
“The peaches scene was one that people had been waiting for the whole show to see,” Han told USA Today about the reasoning for picking that episode specifically. “I wanted to treat it really carefully,” she added. So, we can likely expect a similar rationale for the movie.
While working as a director, Han revealed that “even though I had written it and read it a million times, there was something new I was finding on the page every single time I looked at the script. New thoughts that I was having, like, ‘Oh, maybe I’ll do this or that.’ And I think that made it feel very exciting and fresh for me, like its own sort of creative wellspring.”
Who is in the cast of The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie?
Currently, no other details are available besides Han’s tease of the one “big milestone left in Belly’s journey.” However, based on images shared by The Summer I Turned Pretty and Prime Video’s official social media accounts, it has been confirmed that Lola Tung and Christopher Briney will return to reprise their roles as Belly Conklin and Conrad Fisher, respectively
Aside from posing on their own, Lola Tung and Chris Briney also posed alongside Gavin Casalegno, who plays Jeremiah, in front of the movie marquee, so it’s safe to assume that he, alongside the rest of the core cast, will also be returning for the film. Regarding new cast additions or the return of the new faces from Season 3, we’d wait for confirmation from Amazon.

When is The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie coming out?

Although fans are already coming up with theories and timelines, a release date, even a tentative one, has yet to be announced for The Summer I Turned Pretty movie. Speaking to NBC on September 18, 2025, Han said it was “still a little too soon to say” when the movie would come out. She also added: “We don’t know when it’s coming out, but not next year [2026]. We still have to make it.” So, mark your calendars most likely for 2027.
How far along in production is The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie?

In the same NBC interview from September, Han revealed that she and Kucserka had already completed a first draft of the script, and as of December 2025, it appears that The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie formally has an official script.
During a panel at The Wrap‘s 2025 Power Women Summit on December 2, 2025, Han confirmed the script was ready, but the film still wouldn’t arrive anytime soon. “I just wrote it,” Han said. “I know that everyone was hoping that it was coming out this Christmas, but unfortunately, [that’s] not happening, not possible.”
Han also took the chance to dispel any rumors that they had shot the film concurrently with season 3. “We have not filmed anything yet,” she confirmed. She also added a little bit of context on how long it takes for a project of this scale to go from the page to the screen. Han revealed that while most of the filming for season 3 took place in 2024, the show was in post-production right down to the wire. “We were still in post up until June, and the show came out in July,” Han shared.
As to when the movie could begin filming, that remains to be seen. On December 16, Lola Tung debuted a darker hairstyle, prompting speculation that she could be back in Belly’s shoes, but nothing has been confirmed by Amazon, and given her busy schedule, we highly doubt it. (ICYMI, Tung has quite a few projects coming up, including The Young People with Nico Parker, Johnny Knoxville, Lily Collias, Lexi Minetree, and more.)
That said, Han did spill some beans about the direction the film will take to The Wrap, admitting she’s going for classic ‘90s rom-com vibes, citing Nora Ephron’s Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail, as well as Bridget Jones’s Diary, as her inspirations. “I’m having a lot of fun right now, just thinking and planning,” Han added.
Will The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie be the end of the franchise?

Amazon MGM has confirmed that the upcoming The Summer I Turned Pretty movie “is set to conclude its story” of the global hit series, but that likely just means Belly’s story.
After all, the streamer has always described the show as a “multigenerational drama” that centers around “the complex bonds between mothers and their children, the strength of lasting female friendships, and the transformative journey of growing up.”
While the announcement of the movie is keeping fans going for now, there’s also chatter about more potential The Summer I Turned Pretty spinoffs, specifically one centered on the backstory of Laurel and Susannah. When asked about the possibility of exploring that story at the Paris series finale event, Han told Teen Vogue: “Never say never.”
“I’d love to see how Laurel’s Adam became Susannah’s Adam,” Jackie Chung, who plays Belly’s mom Laurel, also told Teen Vogue. In the books, it is mentioned that Adam dated Laurel first before getting with Susannah. “I’m curious how they all started out,” Chung added, “I guess it could be parallel in a way.”
Back in 2023, Vernon Sanders, global head of television at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, already said: “This show is going to continue to be a huge centerpiece for us, and we absolutely have plans to continue building it. Jenny’s got great vision for where she wants to go with all of it, but we’re already hard at work developing complementary pieces.” Notice the use of the plural there…
