“[They’re] on Quite the Journey”: ‘Chicago Fire’ Showrunner Teases Stella and Severide’s Next Steps as a Couple

Chicago Fire has been an intense place in the past couple of months. The tragedy which befell Chief Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney), as the show killed off his wife, Monica (KaDee Strickland), and how he has reacted to it since has been at the fore. The return of one of its key characters, Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker), has also stolen the spotlight on the show with minds turning away from one interesting storyline. Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) and her husband, Kelly Severide’s (Taylor Kinney) relationship has been a cornerstone of the show for sometime now. The couple have long since discussed the prospect of expanding their family, but that has been held off for sometime. But that seems set to change.

Having married in Season 10, Episode 22, “The Magnificent City of Chicago”, Stellla and Severide have discussed the prospect of having a baby in Season 12, with Stella picking out adoption as her preferred route to motherhood. Showrunner Andrea Newman, in an interview with TV Line, has discussed the storyline, confirming that the couple will soon have news regardign their baby in coming episodes. This will signify a major development in their relationship, and Newman’s comments read:

“[The couple is] on quite the journey this season trying to start their family… In an upcoming episode, they’ll finally get the call they’ve been waiting for. What happens then, viewers have to tune in to find out!”

A Baby Could Change the Feel of Firehouse 51

One of the major keys that brought the question of family to the fore for Stella and Severide lay in the events of this season’s One Chicago crossover event. During the three-hour-long event which brought together FireChicago Med and Chicago P.D., Stella’s life was threathened, trapped underground alongside P.D.‘s Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) and several others. “They’ve made some promises to each other to not be separated again and not be apart as much as possible, and then this episode does tear them apart,” showrunner Newman said at the time. Adding, “Moving forward, it’s kind of about figuring out where they are as a couple, and the conversations about family really come up in that. That’s something that they’re dealing with going forward, and big decisions are being made.”

While welcoming a baby is a beautiful thing for the couple, it comes with attendant responsibliities. Given that both parents are firefighters and key members of Firehouse 51, having a child to care for will likely see one parent absent to be in the baby’s vicinity to ensure that they are safe. Given that Stella has opted out pregnancy, the couple and the audience can very quickly jump into a storyline which promises fun plotlines and additional drama.

Chicago Fire airs new episodes every Wednesday on NBC. You can also catch up with past episodes on Peacock in the US.
