This Overlooked ‘9-1-1’ Character Shines Again Thanks to Buck’s New Arc.th01

9-1-1 Season 9 still has one episode left in its three-part premiere, which has largely focused on the season’s big space disaster. While Hen (Aisha Hinds) and Athena (Angela Bassett) find themselves trapped in a geomagnetic storm, the second episode surprisingly shines a light on a long-overlooked character — Harry Grant (Elijah M. Cooper).
Once a major part of the early seasons, Harry disappeared after moving to Florida with Michael and David. His return in Season 7 promised new storylines, but he quickly faded into the background. Now, Season 9 is finally giving him a meaningful arc as he settles back in with Athena and Bobby.

In ‘9-1-1’ Season 9, Episode 2, Buck Becomes a Mentor to Harry

In the Season 9 premiere of 9-1-1, Athena (Angela Bassett) discovers that her son Harry (Elijah M. Cooper) has dropped out of high school and taken a job at a coffee shop. The change feels sudden, but it’s clear that Bobby’s death has deeply affected him. Although Harry supported Athena through her grief at the end of last season, this is the first time the show explores his own. He’s angry and afraid after learning that Athena will be going to space — especially since she’s been emotionally distant since Bobby’s passing. Instead of addressing their strained relationship, Athena embarks on the dangerous mission with Hen (Aisha Hinds), leaving Harry feeling more abandoned than ever.

Sensing how lost Harry is, Buck (Oliver Stark) steps in. Early in the series, Buck himself was aimless and reckless until he found meaning with the 118. Recognizing a familiar pain, Buck reassures Harry that Athena will be fine and invites him to tag along with the team — partly to keep him occupied, but also to give him a sense of belonging. The plan works better than expected: Harry becomes genuinely engaged during the calls, finding focus and purpose again under Buck’s mentorship.

9-1-1’ Finally Gives Harry the Storyline He Deserves in Season 9

In 9-1-1 Season 9, Episode 2, Harry Grant finally gets the spotlight — and it’s the best storyline he’s had so far. While riding with the 118, Harry shows genuine interest in helping during rescue calls, even coming up with ideas that actually work. It’s clear the show is setting him up to officially join the team, and honestly, it’s the perfect move.

After Bobby’s death, having Harry become a firefighter feels like a natural way to honor his stepfather’s legacy. It also gives Buck a new role as a mentor, much like Bobby was for him — showing how much Buck has grown. With Athena already a first responder and May likely returning to dispatch, Harry joining the 118 would tie the Grant-Nash family back into the show’s core team.

Harry’s arc mirrors Bobby’s own redemption story — turning grief into purpose. If he really joins the 118, it won’t just be the right step for his character, it’ll be one of 9-1-1’s most heartfelt storylines yet.
