Three’s Company’ Star Joyce DeWitt Breaks Silence on Suzanne Somers’ Passing

‘Three’s Company’ Star Joyce DeWitt Speaks Out About Suzanne Somers’ Death

Joyce DeWitt, 74, offered her heartfelt condolences to Suzanne Somers’ family after learning of her former Three’s Company co-star’s passing. Somers passed away at her home on Sunday, October 15, one day before her 77th birthday.

“My deepest condolences go out to Suzanne’s family,” DeWitt said in a statement shared with People. “They were a very close-knit family — deeply connected and caring for each other. I can only imagine how difficult this is for all of them.”

She continued, “I am sure that Suzanne has been welcomed by the Angels into the loving wisdom that awaits us all on the other side, and I hope that it will help her family’s hearts heal as they navigate this difficult time.”

From 1977 to 1981, Somers, DeWitt, and the late John Ritter played roommates Chrissy Snow, Janet Wood, and Jack Tripper on the hit ABC sitcom Three’s Company.

After Somers was fired due to a contract dispute (she demanded equal pay with her male co-star Ritter), the show continued without her until the fall of 1984 when the spin-off Three’s a Crowd, starring Ritter, debuted.

After leaving the show, Somers continued to headline Las Vegas productions and eventually returned to television to star in Step-by-Step (1991–1998). She also launched a health, beauty, and fitness empire and authored several books on the subject.

DeWitt and Somers reunited in February 2012, more than 30 years after Somers left Three’s Company, on the set of Somers’ talk show Breaking Through. During the segment, the two women hugged, talked about what happened, and expressed admiration for each other.

“You stood up to cruelty, and it fell apart,” DeWitt told Somer, adding, “What you did was tremendous.”

Recently, DeWitt, whose stage career spans decades, appeared in a country music video for the Davisson Brothers Band’s song “Home,” which included an affectionate tribute to Three’s Company: For a moment, the camera focused on a framed late-’70s photo of Ritter, DeWitt, and Somers together as Jack, Janet, and Chrissy.
